Just an observation but I had a bit of a play letting the plan builder work out my training up to my target gran fondo next summer. I put in my A race, my single B and numerous C races including another gran fondo of 4 hours, as this was a C race it scheduled another 2 hour session the same day. This makes sense to me when it’s a 1 hour tt but seems a little unlikely to ever be attempted if I’ve already spent 4 hours on the bike that day!
That aside it produced an interesting plan with a few variations I’d not thought of, although the inability to schedule holidays into the mix is a bit of a drawback for me at the moment.
I really like what you’ve done here. Maybe I didn’t see how to do it but can you move from mid volume to low or high volume inside the plan it builds?
My plan is to ride mid volume training indoors during the frozen winter months. Then switch to low volume on the trainer and add outdoor rides on the gravel and trails outside of my TR plan, skills and mental health time. I’d like to be able to drop to low volume once the snow is gone and can play outside.
Again, this is just what to Dr ordered to help me get faster and kick some young riders butts.
You can do this either by selecting the option to customize training days by block, which then gives you not only the ability to customize which days workouts fall on but also volume and plan (e.g. which build or specialty you want to do), or after you’ve added the plan to the calendar by clicking on the annotation for the start of a given block.
Has me doing an abbreviated SSB1 (4 weeks) and then an abbreviated SSB2 (4 weeks). Which is all fine, but how come there is no Ramp Test to start SSB2?
Ok plan building question here. Both my partner and I are preparing for the Presque Isle ITT, tentatively on April 26th (date TBD but this is the historic week of the race). We have been doing SSB and just started SSB2, all this was for a full 24 week build leading to the above date.
Running through the planner it would start SSB over and do both SSB1 and SSB2 in full but cut 3 weeks off the build and 4 weeks off the specialty phase. Given that we’ve already been doing SSB and are on track to complete all 3 phases in full prior to the race, should we start SSB over?
In reading FB posts on the TR group it is common to see people say FTP drops in the base phase are common…and we have both seen that through SSB1 that we just completed. People go on to say FTP gains happen during the build and specialty phases so it’s interesting (confusing) that those are the parts of the plan that are cut short. Now I’m sure (or I’m guessing really) that in this case the fact that it’s a TT build means SSB is training similar sustained threshold efforts as opposed to a crit or road race where the efforts are different.
Just tried it, plugged in an event in July, got recommended SSB1 HV, SSB2 HV, sustained power, SSB2, century HV. As someone already at the end of SSB1 HV I suppose I should welcome the redo of the plan and not get into more pain with SSB2 lol
Anyhow, looking forward to delving more into planning this way! And of course I’m sure this is just a gateway to our future AI overlords coaching us!
I am certainly going to plan next year with this, but as others have wished before me, I would hope that one day TR will allow for a specification of day-by-day maximum times (the way Today’s Plan does), with automatic selection of the workout if on a certain day I allow, say, for a maximum of 60 minutes.
Interesting to see people saying their plan splits SSB1 and SSB2 sometimes with a build phase (which not seen recommended before) and seen specialty phases after SSB2…so stuff like SSB1, Build, SSB2, specialty.
Interesting mix but wonder if leap from SSB1 to build may be too hard for some.
@Nate_Pearson@Chad what’s the thinking behind this - not being critical at all, just interested in the logic.
Great stuff! One request though: Feature for choosing a mix of volume plans, e.g. mid volume during weekdays and high volume during weekends. Thanks for a great product.
Plan Builder gave me SSB1 - Short Power Build - SSB2 - Short Power Build, huh???
I’m not sure Short Power Build is gonna feel great coming out of SSB1. Is this right?
This is exactly what you’d expect, and even Coggan talks about this. In the short term, VO2 max intervals raise your fitness the most.
This was not compared to the Coggan method, so we can’t infer that anything is better. It’s also a short time period and not everyone was cyclists, so you need to take that into consideration.
I’ve talked about this a bunch already in the polarized thread. Let’s not derail this conversation with that. If you want to discuss more check out the polarized thread.
Browser back button wipes everything out. Browser forward button doesn’t restore the data entered. TR breadcrumb nav works fine, maybe add a browser back popup confirmation with warning message.
I just did something similar for a multi-day bikepacking event, and I used the category of ‘stage race’. It’s at the bottom, and it then allows you to choose your discipline. Each day you can define the intensity for the specific event. Might be an option.
Looks awesome! I’ve found a bug though (haven’t had time to look through the rest of the thread so might have been mentioned). When putting a cyclocross plan, with no events, I got an error message when trying to switch a high volume block I to mid volume (see attached photo).
Going back using the tabs, or refreshing/ starting again doesn’t help, so I’m not sure if its simply replicating each time, or if it has just broken the feature for me. I’ll clear the cache and try a different browser.
I think I found a bug. When I try to edit / update an existing event in Calendar, the system crashes and sends me back to the TR.com homepage.
Also, I have a series of 5 events that all have the same name (weekly crit series). When I ask the tool to import my events, only one event shows up.
I can see how this is going to help a lot of the people new to TR and save some time for those of us with experience. Thanks for always pushing to improve!!
