Nice (but slightly chilly) morning here in Lancaster, England so did Artist Point instead of Bird -1. Log In to TrainerRoad
Used some local climbs for the intervals, according to the NP for the laps I was bang on, but actual wattage and time in zone isn’t as ideally prescribed. Still very happy to have got this one done outside and confident I’ve obtained a decent workout from it. FWIW I’ve aligned the zones on my Garmin to the 7 TR prescribed zones, and used a data screen with just 3s power, lap time and power zone number to perform the workout. It worked well.
I am trying to see this as a good thing so had a little play round. My next workout is Lion Rock and the intervals are - 3 sets of 3x5-minute Threshold efforts that begin with a 15-second sprint at 150% FTP and then settle in for 4 minutes at 95% FTP, aka “racewinners”.
I select do as outside workout and “Old Shoe” comes up and the cues I get are 5 x 12minute sets. Not sure of a glitch or whats happening.
Manual importing of outside rides (e.g. FIT files) has been implemented already for some time. Go to Past Rides → Import Rides and simply upload your file.
I’m training outside for a while now, following standard workouts. I think I’ll keep them, because outdoor alternatives look lower “quality”. But it’s good to have an option.
@Nate_Pearson What do you recommend to people that have copied the indoor workouts 1:1 to their outdoor rides and have been fine with it? Do you think generally doing the replacement workouts is more beneficial because they are easier to nail down or would you do the indoor workouts as long as it’s feasible to do so?
I have some nice stretches of roads and all possible variants of long and short climbs close to my home and so far have been able to get close to the same workout quality as when executing them indoors. At least this is what I believe. Admittedly, remembering or writing down workouts like Bear or Basin is quite tedious but the complexity keeps me focused and is part of the experience to me.
edit: Please keep developing head unit integration!!!
This is very impressive and will have taken a huge amount of work. So well done.
But not sure its really the game changer some people think it is
If you buy Allen and Coggan’s Training with Power they will give you 30-40 Power work outs in the Appendix. They are very good; and reality is you dont need any more than that
The issue; as ever; is finding a way to do these intervals at the required intensity and duration on a road. If you could get your crank Poweremeter to have erg mode you will have truly cracked it !
I think for a lot of people, the novelty will wear off and we will go back inside for the truly structured stuff.
That’s not to belittle this achievement - it makes TrainingPeaks increasingly irrelevant to a lot of people. But the issue of roads/terrrain/traffic make it hard to match the quality of indoors
I have done exactly this for entire base, build cycles. Memorize the workout and go do it outside. It’s not that hard. Hell, if you need to write it down, then make a note and take it with you. Aside from something like Spanish Needle, most of the workouts in the plans are very doable outside.
Looking at some of the outdoor alternatives makes me wonder.
E.g. i wanted to do Eichorn outside today, which is 2X20 minutes @ 90%, pretty straight forward to do outside. But looking at the recommended outdoor alternative “osgood” is “- 4x8 minutes between 277-296 that each start with a 12 second sprint between 472-788”. To me this looks more like “racewinner intervalls”.
On the other hand, Lion Rock, a racewinner workout, is “- 5x12 minutes where 2 minutes slightly below FTP, alternating with a single minute slightly above FTP. Something around 2 minutes at 284 watts followed by 1 minute at 331 watts.” when to be done outside. More like over unders.
To me these are in both cases totally different Workouts if you compare the inside option with the outside alternative.
I think the Trainerroad Crew thought this through, but i really do not understand this matter.
