I linked the article (that contains all the info) and stated what I thought was most relevant to the question you posed (vs quoting large sections).
It is not untrue, just incomplete based on your followup question that I did not anticipate. My mistake for not reading your mind or spoon feeding the eniter article as a repost.
Hey, that’s good for you. Of course there’s two sides.
But I’m not you…I’m emotionally attached to the core of the show. Chad, Jon, and Nate. Their podcast starting coincided with my entry to the sport. I listened to probably the first 100 episodes multiple times.
They don’t know me from a can of paint, but they gave me so much; inspiration, training advice, laughter, hope during long winters, that I can’t help but feel sad and pissed off.
I’m relaxed, but I’m also allowed to mourn things that I’ve lost (mostly within myself) and to express my emotions…and sometimes without all the “facts” and this makes me sad.
CaptainThunderpants did not say it was out of boycott. If I read correctly it is that Chad’s topics and contribution to the podcast has been missing and the podcast lack the focus and valuable content of the past. I personally have been struggling to find the desire to listen to the podcast beginning to end lately. Since Amber’s departure and now Chad it will be interesting to see if the podcast will continue with more training related focus or as others have stated. It seems lately the focus is on some event like The Lifetime series, or such. I really like Ivy and her style. More inline with what I like. Seems less serious and more fun focused while still providing valuable content.
100% Keegan isn’t just going out ‘to ride’. All of his rides are done with intention which in the end, is structure. It might not be the exact structure Jon and TR are selling, but Keegan is doing structure. Just 25 hours of of it, ha. Pretty easy to see what he’s doing for those curious. He doesn’t hide his data. Mostly end+ with vo2/anaerobic stuff these days. Earlier was in the year lots of end, threshold etc.
Sort of resembles some of Frank at FasCats plan: lots of endurance, group rides/sweet spot rides till you’re gassed, intervals etc
Whatever Keegan and Jim Miller4 are doing, it’s working. A few friends around that group of people mentioned Lachlan holding him back at Cape Epic.
That’s my point, you probably wouldn’t hear that type of clarification on a CTS or FasCat or ScientificTriathlon podcast. Because on those podcasts, the hosts treat endurance riding as a first principle. Regular endurance rides of 7-9 hours showcase a high level of fitness and long-term development.
This isn’t some inner circle stuff, Lachlan said Lachlan held Keegan back. But to be fair to Lachlan, there are a lot of reasons why cape epic would be a struggle for him and fitness is not at the top of that list.
I just watched that video! Great look into the race with those two and breaking it down. You could certainly see and Lachy even mentions being the weaker link. Ha maybe that’s where they also got their intel. Was just mentioning what came up in conversation from those around that group of people, not some secret inner circle stuff. I honestly think they’re pretty good partners and hope they come back next year together.
I think they could definitely do well if they showed up 100%. I would love a Blevins/Swenson USA super team but I don’t think specialized would ever do a cross-brand team. They have too many riders under their umbrella to look outside.
I think the explanation TR gives on the linked webpage is quite apt given the target audience (≠ exercise physiologists/people who have read e. g. The Bible). That’s a carefully crafted document, i. e. very different from speaking off the cuff, perhaps somewhat imprecisely, within context or even make mistakes.
In the high school coaching world,I know three different coaches with three different philosophies.
Coach #1 has a rigid schedule. The season is planned in advance and everyone must stick to it. If it’s on the schedule… you do it. Adjustments “negatively impact end goals.” There’s a formula and it needs to be followed (i.e. you need to be training at this pace for these intervals by this date to reach your goal). The program is low mileage and heavy on VO2 and anaerobic intervals.
Coach #2 makes it up as they go. They have no formal schedule (but do have a general format (such as 2 intervals days a race and a longer run weekly). It’s more of a vibe and they go with their gut of what the athletes need from observation. In TR terms they are the “train now” of the coaching world.
Coach #3 has a calendar & framework but then makes adjustments based on feedback. The workouts are planned but things get moved, adapted or maybe scrapped altogether. It’s a plan but completely fluid. A hybrid of the two coaches above in sorts. Training is focused on volume, threshold and the long run is the cornerstone of their program.
And the crazy thing? All three have successful programs. All very different. All forms of “structure.”
I think the key is finding the fit for you. Coaches need to coach to their personality, athletes will be most successful in a program that fits theirs.
I think Jonathan was merely clarifying for new users the difference between just riding, and going out for an endurance ride that’s a part of a structured plan.
I don’t think any other service would look at it any differently.
Jon has always been pretty focused on trying to spell things out for someone listening for the first time/new to cycling.
This is part of the problem. TR has always pushed the fact that they were more than just a company. There seemed to be very tight bonds with these guys going on trips and experiencing this whole journey together with us.
Now I don’t blame Nate at all. I have no idea what happened or what is going on but the Amber departure was VERY weird and certainly not handled with the same candor that they used with everything else. A few weeks before applauding her and her teams work and then Gone??? Did they get all they could out of her and she had no further use? Was it a cost issue and thats why they started grooming IVY for the podcast and keep the appeal for female riders ( I certainly enjoy all the ladies input!!!) so that they could reduce costs? It was an abrupt departure and I would have enjoyed a goodbye podcast. Chad’s exit and the message is bizarre. It leaves a whole. I dont mind the hot takes here and there but its not worth listening to every show if its hot takes as it just turns into a hot mess.
Also if it was out of respect for all it would have been something Like. “Hi everybody, a quick update on the goings on at TR. Coach Chad is no longer with TR and we wish him the very best going forward.”
Certainly not followed up with the purging of his existence from TR.
Again, who knows what the hell happened!!!
If its just HOT TAKES going forward then it certainly is not a 5 star podcast in my mind.
I feel as we all feel, shocked and not sure what the podcast will be like from here on out.
If we ever find out what happened, then hopefully we all get some closure and understanding. The way it ended makes it seem as though a line was crossed and it meant immediate termination regardless of their partnership. Even then we don’t know those details of their business.
Ivy is great on the podcast. Gives a nice balance to Jonathan’s analyzing every last detail. There was a recent podcast and I think they were discussing tires. Somebody asked Ivy about here tires and her response was very casual. It’s refreshing on the podcast to have somebody with that fun perspective
