I’m getting them off Amazon -bulk supplements is the name I think
So I’ll probably use Amazon; what are folks preferred maltodextrin products/brands?
I also just started my own this week because I didn’t want to pay for Skratch High Carb anymore. I went with the standard Nutricost on Amazon and also bought some Sodium Citrate. I did a ratio of 8g of table sugar for every 2g of maltodextrin and a pinch of the sodium citrate yesterday for the first time.
Very inoffensive flavor, I’ve arrived home feeling better from 2.5hr rides though, so I think I will do a larger serving next time.
I created a Google Sheet that you can customize your ratio of Glucose to Fructose if you use Maltodextrin and table sugar. The OP’s sheet is awesome and definitely an inspiration for mine but I’ve been toying around with different ratios lately (trying to find a great recipe for gels!) and needed something more automated and straightforward.
Basically enter how many grams of carbs you’re looking for (useful for making a bulk product!), your desired ratio (2:1, 1.5:1, 1:0.8, anything really) and it spits out how many grams of Malto and table sugar you need to mix. I also included Sodium citrate which is just 5% of the weight of the carbs, but feel free to make adjustments as needed.
EDIT: I just added a new tab for those who use Gatorade for flavor. I derived the G:F ratio of the gatorade from some scientific paper somewhere. Can’t remember where I found that!
does anyone have issues with dissolving? I’m not sure if I used the wrong fructose but i’ll get some clumps when I first add in. by the time I finish the bottle it’s mostly dissolved but wondering if my ingredients are wrong
I’ve been doing 2:1 malto to fructose and doing 80g carb bottles. It’s clumpy at first but dissolves. If I mix it an hour before my ride it’s dissolved before I start.
It doesn’t need to be complicated, table sugar is 1:0.8 fructose/glucose and that seems to be what is being advocated as optimal especially for higher intakes.
Sugar - xxxg/bottle as required
Citric acid to taste ~1tsp/bottle
Citrate ~1tsp/bottle
Water
Job done - no spreadsheets required and mixes well.
Sugar is 1:1. But close enough. However for maximum fueling strategy on long warm rides a combination of Malto and Fructo might be slightly better due to osmality.
Apologies, table/cane sugar is 1:1, but my point still stands that splitting hairs and obsessing over this is in all likelihood, wasted time. If you are getting grams / hour of cane sugar then you are getting it 99% right but with little/no thought and no spreadsheets or complicated potions. That’s a win in my book!
