Hackberry Advice

Hi Forum.

I have Hackberry coming up soon which will be the first time doing short bursts over FTP. I’m using a Wahoo Kickr with no additional power meter. This is my first time using TR with a decent smart trainer and at first I had some issues understanding how ERG mode worked. Now I have a little understanding of it and how it reacts I feel that ERG mode will struggle to apply the required resistance as I increase my power/cadence with the instant rise from 41% FTP to 111-116% FTP. I’ve been riding with front chain ring in 36t and rear in approx 17t ring on 28t cassette.
Any advice from TR regulars would be appreciated.

I use ERG mode for 30/30s all the time.

Here’s an example of Gendarme +3 where I did 50 x 30/20s at 120% of FTP.

Keeping your trainer in a low gear, as you mentioned, makes a huge difference, and I didn’t have to pace these efforts at all. I just let ERG do its thing, and the effort felt perfect by the end of each set.

I’m not interested in trying to manage 50 x 30/20s manually.. :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

ERG mode for life!

If anything, it may feel like the trainer picks up resistance too quickly if you’re not paying enough attention, making you struggle to get your cadence back. The “hack” (not really, that’s what almost every workout tells you in the instructions) is to increase your cadence 2-3 seconds before the interval starts. That makes things go smooth like butter.

Erg user here too for vo2. My tacx neo takes a few seconds to ramp up, so it may first appear that you are cutting the interval a bit short, however it ramps down at the same rate, so you are getting what you missed back at the tail end.

Thank you all. I’ll give ERG mode a go and see how I do. If we don’t get along I’ll try it without.
