Thanks! Just ordered a pair.
And @Eric_F - maybe refresh? I was able to get two without any issues.

What’s the widest tyre that a Colnago G3x frame will take?
Has anyone experimented with a 45 or 47?
Colnago claims 42mm max but looking at the 38’s that the bike has come with I think I can go wider.
Has anyone any experience with this?
It’s for the Graloch event.
Tufo Thundero 48 first ride impressions…
On pavement, they felt like a big, old Cadillac - smooth, soft, and not very sporty. Being a little heavier than what I’m used to on my bike, they felt a little slower to spin up, but rolled fairly well once at a decent speed. I didn’t get the sense that they are particularly fast, but also not drearily slow. The increased frontal area of the wider tire will have some impact on speed. That said, they don’t feel as fast as Thunder Burt 2.1s (which also test very well on BRR). On the dirt, the big Thunderos are at home. On a long climb with multiple rough and rocky sections, they didn’t get bumped around as much as narrower ties, and floated through rough spots very similar to my MTB. On smoother sections of the climb, I didn’t get a feeling of a weight penalty when rolling at a steady effort. Descending a twisty, rutted singletrack, with multiple spots of sand over hardpack, the cornering grip was confident enough that I don’t think going with a knobbier front tire (like a Swampero) is necessary. Same as my experiment with the Thunder Burts, I didn’t feel like I needed to be as picky about my line choice to avoid rocks and roughness.
For my typical local rides, which always include a mixture of surfaces and terrain, the bigger tires will be a lot of fun, especially if there is a lot of rough descending involved. For racing, I think I’m going to stick with my Thunder/Swampero 40s combination, for now. That said, I could see that some people would find their happy place racing on Thundero 44s.
So what about 659b wheels with 2.1s? How does the rolling resistance compare to the same tire in 700x45, or 29x2.1? ( my bike can handle 700x47 or 650x2.1.). I didnt see this on BRR
I just got a set of ENVE Ag28 650B wheels and put some Thunderburt 2.1 tires in them. Took them down to Bentonville while on a business trip to check them out this week.
Very impressed overal……on the gravel. But definitely slower on the road. Didn’t really notice the difference in the road until my second ride and it was definitely a thing.
Same here. Bumped up to 47’s for Sea Otter and they were spot on. Hit the roads this weekend and definitely more sluggish than my more narrow tire. (All 700c).
Bicycle Rolling Resistance has tested the 47 Pathfinder Pro
Mid-pack for rolling resistance, near the top for puncture score and wet grip. Although BRR has only tested 6 gravel tires >45mm and it’s 4th out of those 6 for RR.
Durable tire. Terra speed seems to be a 4w faster but 10pts less flat protection
I’ve got 2 races on my S-Works Pathfinder 42s now with no issues. I’m ~180 lbs and run the front around 36 and rear just south of 40. I have not found them to be any less durable than the 42 Pros even though they’re a lighter tire. I also love that the center slick line is flush with the tread on either side, rather than being raised. There’s no weird feeling when leaning the bike onto the outer tread, it transitions smoothy. My Pros did not, there was always a brief moment of limbo when you leaned the bike hard enough to come off the center slick and onto the outer tread, and I HATED that moment, it just felt like the bike was going to break loose every time I leaned it and it was not confidence inspiring at all.
I just ordered a pair of 47 pros for Big Sugar and plan to do some testing on them over the summer and then decide if I’m going to go S-works 42s or pro 47s for Big Sugar.
All that said, Texas gravel is smooth and fast for the most part with the occasional fresh dumped chunk. I know the Ozarks presents a different challenge for tires having ridden there a handful of times, and I think the 47 pros is what I’m going to want to be on up there. The wattage I give away to a heavier tire will come back in spades if it doesn’t puncture…
Oh my goodness you definitely want the 47s over the S-Works 42s for Big Sugar. No question.
Concur 100%…the extra width and durability will be worth it.
Anyone with a previous gen Giant Revolt able to squeeze pathfinder pro 47s? I have 42s now but want them in 47s. Or a similar tire that’s 45’ish in size?
I believe 47mm Pathfinder should fit on the front. On the rear I wouldn’t risk it - I already had some rubbing with the 42s when my wheel lost it’s correct dish.
Hutchinson Caracal:
I’m curious what chainrings he runs. I’m guessing he’s using a Quarq PM on those RED cranks so looking at 107BCD 2x chainrings… just guessing at this point. Does someone know more?
Not sure we needed a new fastest 40, unless this is 2018.
Horses for courses. For our local conditions the tyres around 40 mm are the perfect choice.
It looks like a Pathfinder
Confirmed Quarq PM and Cranks, but he hasn’t put out a full build spec that I’m aware of:
