Gravel bar question

Hi all! I have a Giant Revolt X and I need a less wide bar to fit into my bike box for travel (BikeBoxAlan triathlon easyfit - an amazing bike box!!). The box has a max width of 48cm.

My current bars are way too wide at 46cm 16 degree flare and overall with 53cm

The question. Should I just go for a no flare bar at 45cm (overall 48cm) or a 40cm with 12 degree flare that has the drops overall width at 48cm.

Cheers!

It depends on where you’re most comfortable in the hoods, but I personally prefer some flare on all of my bars..

This ^^

If you are more comfortable being aero on the hoods vs drops then I would go no flare. The more narrow the hoods the more restrictive the chest area. If you ride the drops more, then a flare.

The advantage of your box (my wife has one) is that it can fit some bars/tri rigs without removing the cockpit. The standard BBA (the box I have) works by removing the cockpit. I do not see a reason why you can’t remove the bars from the stem or the stem from the steerer, strap it in, and use your box with your current bars. BBA website says the box is compatible with MTB bars that have been removed, so you should be in business.

Thanks! Doing this hadn’t crossed my mind! My road bike has an integrated cockpit, so you can’t take the bars off, but my gravel bike hasn’t so I can take the bars off.

I do love the convenience of leaving my cockpit assembled, so I might still change the bars to allow this.

@The_Conductor I gave it a test, and it works well. Thanks for the suggestion. I love not having to remove the cockpit for travel, so I’ll still look into options for bars, but I don’t HAVE to now! Amazing!

It’s a bit different for everyone, but at 187cm I like a 40cm flared bar for gravel racing; it took some getting used to but now it feels normal.
