GP5000TL - is it normal to find some leaks from the sidewalls?
I have just managed to get a GP5000TL seated on my rear TT disc, with washing up liquid, one of those fancy levers and a CO2 cannister. However it was leaking through the side walls in half a dozen places. Small pin pricks and the like. I have added Stans sealant, and after riding up and down the road for 15-20 mins or so, they seems to have sealed.
When first fitted, is leaking from the sidewalls normal?
I had heard reports of GP5000TL sidewall problems and leakage (Rumour was some were labelled TL, but were in fact standard ones). the tyre has sat under my bench since autum last year.
Thoughts appreciated. I have a 100m TT on Sunday so I would like to be confident that the tyre will hold (ā¦and Yes I will do a longish test ride between now and thenā¦)
Never had a side wall/sealant issue with my 5000TLās (I think I have had 5 of them). Unlike softer tyreās Iāve never had to use a CO2 cannister either. Good luck on the ton
I havenāt used the gp5k, but I have used other TL tires that have had āsidewall moisture dropletsā. Mine always maintained air pressure pretty well and held up just fine over hundreds of miles. I never had to change a tire because of it and only changed because of wearing down the tread. I just made sure to check sealant levels more often to see if I needed to add.
My GP5000-TLs leaked through the side walls quite badly when first installed without sealant. I was a bit peed off as I had read that they should seal from the get go. They completely deflated after 12 hours so it mustāve been pissing out.
Once putting sealant in they have been ok! Retain 75% of pressure approximately over a week of not being used which is good enough for me. Just make sure you pour the sealant in and hold the wheel horizontally and go round and slosh the sealant onto the sidewalls. I went round a couple of times.
I donāt think the manufacturing quality is particularly good, the fitting issues and sealing or not sealing are probably all down to the molding and amount of rubber variationā¦if people are struggling more than other to seal and fit itās a likely cause (also noting the wheel variation).
Interesting. So I decided the GP5000TL I tried to fit last night was faulty. I bought it back in August last year.
I ordered a new one from Wiggle (having had a chat with one of their experts who said the early versions had had some problems). Ordered at 18:50. It arrived at 12:11 today. Just fitted it. It was a bit tougher to put on, (needed a third hand to hold the tyre bead in whilst I applied the special rim to tyre lever) but none of the leaking air from the sidewall issues even before I put sealant in it. Let alone sealant bubbling out of the sidewall. It is almost like a different tyre in that respect.
I hope I am not speaking too soon, but it seems to be holding pressure much better. Have ridden it for 10 mins to spread the sealant. I shall look later tonight and tomorrow am. Fingers crossed.
Regarding the potential for regular tubed tires to be mislabeled tubeless⦠Wouldnāt a quick check on the scale be a truth test? The tubeless versions should be dozens of grams heavier.
Yeah scales is a good shout. There is a molding on the tyre which says āmount on hooked rims onlyā. Not sure if this would be on clinchers too?
Just taken a look at my tyres and thereās a manufacturing date ( i assume) with the week number and year? Mine Is week 38 in 2020ā¦so theyāre ancient, great service from Merlin lol (bought in May 2021, they came without a box). Would be interesting to know what date is on yours Phil. Glad to see your latest one is sealing well though and best of luck with the century.
The original I have is dated, wait for it, 26-19!!! Interestingly it too came without a box. Makes me wonder if I somehow damaged the sidewall while it was under my bench (but I would be surprised). It does say āMount only on hooked rimsā
The latest one is dated 13-21, and came in rather a smart proper box. Much more protection and reassuring.
It seems the GP5000TLwas first released Nov 2018.
I cannot find where I bought it from. It might have been Merlin. I have used them.
My standard GP5000 also says "Mount only on hooked rims. There is a clear difference between the wire bead of the standard clincher GP5000 and the wider shaped rubber bead of teh GP5000TL.
I purchased some GP5000TL 28ās in mid 2020, and did experience some very slow leakage over about a week or so. Recently replaced the rear with a 32 as it was worn out, and pressure loss is about an a par with my old GP4000 clinchers (ie. need to add ~20 psi every 2 weeks).
I can confirm Kool Stop Tire Bead Jack works , I was sceptical but was able to get the Gp5000 TL to fit, so satisfying, they are so hard to fit on the mavic cosmic pro UST but when they do, you can pop them in without pressured air, because they are so tight! Also they hold air without sealant, so hopefully double protection with sealant!
I never thought Iād resort to putting tyres in the oven but there you go. Thanks for the tip. Although I did set the oven to 80°C, as I wasnāt brave enough to try 120°!! Those GP5000s are unlike any tyre Iāve ever fitted.
