GCN was pretty much perfect in content, ease and functionality. It’s a bummer for the sport as a whole to lose.

Same here and no luck. I also created a UK PayPal account linked to my US credit card and PayPal permanently locked that account. Maybe there is a workaround using a prepaid UK card?
Got an email today about this. It will shut down at 10:00am GMT on Tuesday 19th.
This really sucks as I had planned on watching the Namur CX men’s race on the trainer in the morning, and it will already be shut down. ![]()
With Nord (and probably others), I think you can regularly save around 40% with a “sale”. My renewal was going to be full price, but then I found I can get the deal again. I think I’m at $90 or a titch more for 2 years … maybe.
Nord has a nice iPhone version, so I run VPN 100% of the time when on phone or computer.
I use nord VPN
I have Disco+ through my EE mobile contract which has worked out really handy given the GCN news (I was considering cancelling GCN anyway, think I said something upthread to that effect).
Worth checking if you have EE if you have any add-on slots available (I got 3 on my contract and it didn’t cost much more to have that, I certainly didn’t select the contract on that basis).
so if a person living in the US had a VPN and a prepaid bank card from say…Bank of Ireland, and the VPN was set to…oh…let’s randomly pick Dublin…could said US citizen then sign up for Eurosport? Said person cannot bear the idea of listening to Bob Roll say “Tur day France” or Chris Horner talk about himself ad nauseam

If you can create a UK paypal account, don’t put a credit card on it, just send it some money from another account.
“Said person cannot bear the idea of listening to Bob Roll say “Tur day France” …”
That is the least of BobK’s offences. The worst part is his live “translation” of the French interviews. It is not only incorrect, it is often completely unrelated to what the rider is actually saying and sometimes the exact opposite of what is being said. He is so wrong that he could be exposing himself to a defamation lawsuite.

What did you do when PayPal asked for phone number? It’s required and there’s no country code option for a U.S.-based number.
I didn’t. Someone else above was talking about having made a UK paypal account. One obviously needs some kind of virtual phone number. I found this site:
I’m personally waiting to find out that discovery+ from the UK works in the US over VPN before I even try to jump through tall the hoops. It doesn’t help to get the account if they block VPN use.
Good idea. I think I’ll wait it out too.
RIP GCN+, you were too beautiful for this world
From the recent Cyclingnews article on the demise of GCN:
“It’s worth remembering that Europeans on holiday can watch all cyclocross live streams on Discovery+ Eurosport by using a VPN such as ExpressVPN from abroad.”
This to me suggests that watching European Disco+ via a VPN works fine. I’m thinking I’ll go ahead and get my UK-based pal to create an account and see how that goes…
That would be good news. I wonder if that is a sure thing that has been tested (discovery+ & VPN) or if they are just assuming.
Well they are definitely advertising VPNs. But the fact that a Euro-based site is doing so suggests VPNs can be used to watch Euro-based content from abroad.
Importantly I’m pretty certain that signing up for Discovery+ in the US then VPNing to Europe does you no good. You have to figure out a way to get a valid login for a European Disco+ account, which is proving difficult unless you have a willing accomplice in Europe.
Confirming that it definitely works via VPN. ![]()
It’s probably using the same streaming platform that GCN was.
Thanks for this confirmation.
Does it work via VPN when streamed from a browser (not from the app)?
A further hurdle is that outside Europe those of us on iOS devices can’t download the correct version of the app to stream European content, because app stores are georestricted.
