Garmin or Wahoo?

Wow that’s cool :+1:t4:

I’m on Dura Ace so want aware of that functionality.

Thank you

no di2 or anything like that over here… so the manual way on 530 is during a ride hit the top-right button on 530:
Recording - Top Right Button

Select Light Network and then select Taillight (my name for Bontrager Flare RT)
Light Network - Main

Then change light mode for the specific device:
Light Network - Light Mode

Thank you for that. I guess I need to read the manual lol. Probably other features I would use that I didn’t know about.

I just started playing with the device during recovery intervals… most user manuals (all products) are pretty basic and underwhelming.

I bought a Stages when they were on Sale a few weeks back. Haven’t hooked it up yet as I’m wating on a new bike to be built & delivered.

I’m just gonna assume the rubber ripped (as happened with mine) and the button is no longer usable.
Happened to me a year ago, and the issue seems to be commonly known on the interwebs.
Seems like Garmin is only offering customers to purchase a new back plate with the button for an arm and a leg.
I contacted Garmin back then and they didn’t help me. Only through a friend was I then lucky enough for them to replace it with a 1030 for free, after all - doesn’t you help you, sorry, just wanted to tell me story

I’d look for a back plate on Aliexpress, I think I remember seeing spare parts there back then.

I’m considering swapping from Garmin (1000) to a Wahoo Bolt.
After a good look online, I can’t seem to work out if the Bolt has an equivalent elevation graph to this, which I find useful to see a) what hills are coming up and b) how far up/how steep the sections of a hill are.

Can anyone let me know if the Bolt can do this?
Also, if you had the option to get the Garmin 1030 or the Wahoo Bolt for the same price, which would you choose? (most of my use is by loading gpx files with planned courses on them).

I do climbs on unfamiliar roads and Garmin’s ClimbPro on 530/830/1030 is really nice. I’ve got the 530 and been very happy.

The Bolt’s bread crumb navigation is a step down. No turn-by-turn unless the route has embedded instruction - as far as I know that means getting routes from Kamoot or RideWithGPS. What does that mean? My previous 520 shaped based routing gave turn instructions on Strava routes, the Bolt did not. Look at the Wahoo Roam for real navigation. Your 1000 has real navigation.

Yes, the Bolt does this. Personally, I am 100% Wahoo.

Wahoo, every time gets my vote.

Garmin, I’ve had three Garmin head units and every one has let me down massively, never had an issue with the Wahoo. Garmin nice graphics and menu structure but what use is that when it freezes 10 miles into a 130 mile Grand Fondo?

Over 1000 rides on Garmin 520 and 530, never lost a minute. Always worked and reliable.

Only a 1000?

Maybe they have got it dialled with the software and hardware on the 520, 530.

Many at my club have Garmin 1000, 500, 800 and I can guarantee every other week either on the mid-week or weekend ride someone losses / doesn’t get their full ride data to upload.

I had the original 500, 800, 1000 and they were always freezing. The other problem with the 1000 was battery dying after 4 hours. Maybe that is not a problem with smaller screens and newer models.

I switched to Wahoo because the Garmin freezing losing data, poor battery performance and three times the 1000 flew of its mount (the last time it cracked the touch screen)

I was entering a 11 - 12 hour event so went for the Wahoo as at the time it had the best battery performance.

We have over 600 people in our club, lost rides are not common. Some switched to Bolt for the phone integration to sync routes. Garmin has since improved route sync. Our club uses RideWithGPS.

Pretty much sums up my experience too (I have both units).

Boils down to own personal preference. I enjoy all the bells and whistles from Garmin Edge 530. Also have a Garmin Fenix 5 watch. Neither of the devices has ever let me down.

As far as what device is best Garmin or Wahoo. They both work, both are dependable and cyclists have own personal preference as to which best fits his or her needs.

My buddy has a Wahoo and he says he likes my Garmin 530. Says he wishes he would have got the Garmin instead. I tell him as long as it works, that’s all that matters. His answer to me is, “But your Garmin looks so clean.” Well maybe you should have gotten a Garmin…

I started with a Garmin and just stick to what works for me. Never even considered switching over to another cycling unit.

I’ve really enjoyed my Bolt for the last few years but over the last three months things have gone downhill.

The phone application will not hold a connection to the computer so live tracking no longer works then when I get home I have to kill the app, reopen and force a sync to get the ride to upload.

Does Wahoo have any equivalent of Garmin Connect for building workouts? A lot of the workouts I do are custom, but I don’t want to pay for Training Peaks just for the sake of being able to push built workouts to my Wahoo. Garmin Connect you can build a workout and then push it to the device, I don’t see anything for Wahoo itself, but is there any way to do this without using 3rd parties like TrainingPeaks Today’s Plan, TR, etc?

gahhh, i was wondering about this a bit ago!! I put in a strava route a bit ago and was wondering why it wasn’t prompting me about turns!!

Not that I’m aware of, it’s another reason I’m using Garmin. With free TP I believe you can create workouts for today and tomorrow.

Really easy to build a library of workouts on Garmin Connect, both web and mobile. I’ve got a large list of workouts now:

Thanks for the reply! That’s about the same reason I’ll likely stick to Garmin. I appreciate the fact that Wahoo allows pausing and skipping within a workout, but to lose the ability to have my custom library just doesn’t seem worth it to me. Like you, I have a pretty large list of workouts created over time. Looks like Garmin 530 for me when the time comes  (I’m still on the edge 500 I’ve had since 2011)
