Garmin Edge 530

Glad you’re liking it.

I’m still a bit frustrated by navigation alerts – or lack thereof. I don’t think I’ve turned anything off, but the heads-up for upcoming turns seem very infrequent.

As in the device not doing so?

Yes, auto-upload not working.

Haven’t tried to navigate a course, although I did edit map page and add power and distance to next course point.

Easier to hear radar alerts.

Does anyone know if training status takes into account trainerroad rides that sync automatically? I believe intensity minutes on connect only counts things the watch records (even if you discard) the workout), so curious if training status does a back-end reconciliation.

Nope. I’ve been running the device when doing the indoor rides to boost those stats.

No, it doesn’t pick up rides imported from external sources. It does however pick up activities recorded on other Garmin devices (eg. running) and synced via Physio True Up. I record TR rides on my Edge, and have TR syncing only one way (ie. from Garmin to TR).

On the intensity minutes, you don’t need to record and discard - just wearing the watch during the workout is enough.

How do I add route so I can use climb pro?

So the sensor dropouts only occur on devices connected with BLE?

You’re not missing the touch screen?

I heard some people get annoyed that Garmin UI requires too many button clicks

Problem with training status is it does not count rides done on the trainer (TR) due to licensing, so the numbers are junk if you do both outside and inside rides.

I’m dual recording:

  • TR controls trainer, records power/HR/cadence/fake-speed
  • Edge 530 records power and HR

So training status is working just fine.

Ah, so you start a ride in both the app and on the garmin? I can see this will created problems with sync tho, a lot of double ups.

Disable sending activities from TR to Garmin Connect. Problem solved.

I use one of these two options:

  1. via PC: log in to connect.garmin.com.

On the left you have the option to click on Training > Course (mine is in Dutch so it might not translate to English in the exact same words)

I then click on import and drag the GPX file into the field.

You then save the course and it should sync with your Garmin Edge the next time you turn it on.
If it doesn’t sync immediately, try connecting your phone to the Edge via Garmin Connect app on your phone.

  1. (Android) Find the GPX file on your phone or website where you got it from, try to open the file and on Android you get the option to select the app, select Garmin Connect

The app will ask you if you want to save the route, the only annoying thing is is that you don’t seem to be able to change the name of the route. For me it would be called Ride 3 September if I were to pull in one today.

I am not sure if this works the same on an iPhone, don’t have one to test it sorry.

After you boot up your Edge it should sync.

The climb pro can then be used when you select the route when you start riding.

Garmin has certain criteria put in place to define which climbs get added to climb pro and which aren’t, I am not sure if you can adjust those so it picks up more.

If you have your phone connected to your Garmin edge whilst riding without a route you will get gradient and a profile of the road you are currently riding on but it will not show you the same data as climb pro.

Yes it does. But you have to record and save the ride with your headunit while it’s connected to all the necessary sensors.

It’s important to remember that basically all the fancy metrics are using firstbeat which only works for data collected on the Garmin device at the moment of capture.

Not missing it at all, the touchscreen was not always easy to use as at times it would take several swipes to get the screen to change. With full fingers gloves the touchscreen was useless. The 530 is sooooo much easier for me to use than the 820, changeing screens is simply and can be done with full finger gloves.

Thank you very much! I’ll try it this weekend.

Yes, that was the prevailing theory just before I ditched it for a Wahoo Elemnt Roam. Seems there’s some issues with BLE. I did reset everything and paired sensors up with just ANT+ and I think that helped…but even then I just didn’t trust it anymore.

This should also help you. I find and create courses a couple of ways but mainly from the ios app by having it create one for me based on my parameters. I also search in my area and favorite them and send them to my 530 or 935 depending if I am running or cycling.

For ios go to more, training, courses, create a course, put in your parameters and it will make one based on heat maps. Save it and send to device.

Same goes for existing courses people have already created. Ios go to more, training, courses, search icon on top right. Zoom in and out to find something in your area or go to an area you would ride by exploring the map. After you find one just favorite it and send to your 530.

Below is the manual as well.

That’s much easier! Thx

Anytime as I have been loving the 530 and almost all garmin products for quite some time.
