Garmin announces Connect+ subscription service

Some serious confirmation bias going on at Strava.

I looked at the “athlete intelligence” on a friend’s app and thought it was retarded :joy:

Probably best to use a different adjective there, otherwise I agree

It’s easy to say the usage numbers are through the roof if every user gets presented with those meaningless texts without asking or any means to disable them.
As for the feedback - I’d love to see some of this unbiased user feedback and am willing to bet if it exists there are very few athletes among those happy users. More likely it’s analyst feedback, who usually are happy about anything like a puppy - especially if they get paid to say so

You can disable the AI text, just click on it and it’ll give you the option.

Fully agree otherwise, I have no idea how anyone can use or engage with something displayed by default on every ride page.

I think that probably depends on your definition of athlete. If you just mean “user of Strava”, it wouldn’t surprise me if there are a lot that are impressed by the simple feedback it gives. I think that as power users of athletic devices and software, we forget that we have a bias because we’ve used or researched multiple devices and apps and we’ve seen it all before and have strong opinions on what adds value and what doesn’t, and who does it well and who doesn’t. I don’t think Strava (or GC or FasCat) does these things to try to impress power users, who are a very small percentage of their user base.

I also think there’s a lot of bias toward the apps we know and love. There are a lot of people who LOVE Strava that I think would be ecstatic to get a nice “AI” message congratulating them on getting a Segment KOM. They’re probably also users that don’t do any post ride analysis of their effort, so “you did a nice 60 minute ride that was in your tempo zone and had a few above average efforts” impresses them.

100% this

We’re measuring everyone using our rule. Just because we understand every aspect of the charts doesn’t mean every Strava user understands. As @Pbase said, we’re probably a tiny % of their user base.

Just saw this comment in a Reddit post about the Varia Vue and had to laugh. Spot on.

Hey, that’s very funny, I don’t want to take credit for posting it in the Jokesthread!

Yeah, I admit I struggled trying to decide where it belonged. I would have sworn there was a Varia Vue thread, but I couldn’t find one.

We must SaaS-ify everything! How long until they all move integrations to the paid tier? Maybe add another separate Integration-as-a-Service tier?

We already have SaaS what’s being discussed is SaaPS

Here we go…

“In passing, Pemble (Gamin CEO) also dropped a very quiet bombshell. Noting the broad range of features available to users currently, he said, “certain ones, we will likely reserve for premium offerings.” It’s the clearest confirmation yet that Garmin plans to introduce future premium features to its lineup that will only be accessible to Garmin Connect+ subscribers.”

I feel like that was a really ambiguous quote, and they did it that way to generate clicks. Did he say they would move current features behind the paywall or did he say new features? I haven’t gone and listened to the whole thing to try to find it, so if anyone has, I’d love to hear the whole thing with the appropriate context.
