I just came off a 14 month stretch of Keto and obviously wasn’t using the gels I had accumulated before I started. I found a box of SIS gels in the cabinet experation date of 6/18. Is there anything in the gels that break down and become dangerous? Is the date there mainly for taste or is there a good reason not to use these up first?
When I was racing ten years we had a “sponsorship” with some popular gel brand, which essentially meant we would get tons of boxes of gels that were about to reach their best-before date. We kept using them quite after that date and never had a problem…
I had one that turned to a pure alcohol shot. REALLY messed w that race. It was waasay out of date. Others I threw away.
Couple months no big deal. longer… no thanks.
Yeah the Exp. dates and Best Before dates aren’t the same. Though be safe, test one and don’t do what @dprimm did
On Saturday, I consumed an SiS gel with a BB date of 07/17. No ill effects.
I’ve had expired gels and chews with no issues.
However be cautious with expired bars. I opened some Probars that were past the expiry date and they were completely moldy.
I found some old gu gels when was digging through some old cycling stuff a few days ago. I used on the trainer later that day. The date printed on them was July of 2016. They tasted ok and didn’t make me feel weird. I think you’ll be alright.
Depends if it’s a use by or best before date marked on them. They mean different things
If it’s best before then should be ok.
I find they’re just nice and crunchy a few years past their best.
Mmmm… crystallised sugar
Moldy bars are usually more about the package date than the bar date. Not sure about your case but the times I’ve found a moldy bar it’s usually been kicked around drawers and bags for a while. The packaging gets a small hole or tear in it and air can get in causing mold.
I’m working through some currently with a date of Nov 13 on them, no issues (Science in Sport)
Apparently cockroaches say gels are the only thing that will survice post nuclear war…and they should know
Same here with the chocolate outrage that had been left in the garage and then “found” they were 4 yrs old and rated great on my winter rides
