I tried panaracer Gravel King 32’s they were way undersized and measured smaller than my road 28’s. I returned and got Gravel King 35’s and those were oversized and had frame rub, Specialized says that the Roubaix only has clearance for 33s but given Panaracer spacing I thought it would work.
I ended up running Schwalbe 1 X-One 33s. (Tubed) I might upgrade to a tubeless tire later in the year, I just got tired of screwing with all the tire changes.
Are you able to do long gravel rides without getting beat up? I’m looking at Giant Revolt or Specialized Diverge for a racy gravel bike.
Edit: I think a 2x would be more suitable on a gravel bike, so it’s hard for me to square the circle of using a CX bike for gravel rides, especially hilly ones.
I’ve got a Crux, as well and use it for long gravel rides with no issues. Your tire selection / set-up will have WAY more impact on ride feel than anything else. I toed the line at DK200 with my Crux and was not even worried about my bike selection.
But…if I was gonna get a new gravel bike today, I’d be giving the Giant Revolt a HARD look. LBS has been pumping those out as fast as they can get them. Probably one of the best multi-purpose bikes I have seen. Throw some 28’s on there for fast road rides or 42 knobbies for some dirt fun. Bike would be perfectly at home either way. I think it is a great bike.
Giant Revolt has full hydro brakes only in Apex and Ultegra builds. The 105 build gets the hybrid mech\hydro brakes, which are the worst of both worlds.
The 2020 Revolt’s come with the full hydraulic 105 and not the Giant Conduct hybrid system. They raised the price a couple hundred but still a solid buy.
The 2020 Trek Domane? The new 3rd generation 2020 Domane SLR looks very interesting on paper: clearance for 38c tires, aero tubes with T47 threaded bottom bracket (no more press fit), adjustable compliance, and with the pro endurance geometry (H1.5) its a more aggressive aero race fit like the Madone.
I’ve been pretty happy with my 2015 first gen Domane with mid-aero wheels on fast rides, looking for wider tires to open up riding choices on the weekend.
The new Domane is interesting, but know that that is notably heavier than the prior models. Just rolling it around the shop and short rides in the lot show it to have a nice ride, but it is a bit of a beast compared to my Emonda (which I realize is a massive difference). But even when doing a quick side-by-side on the 2019 Domane, the weight is noticeable.
I worry that they have taken a previously great bike, and tried to make it too much of everything (comfort, aero, all-road). Comparing to the options in our shop, I’d take the 2020 Roubaix with no hesitation between the two.
I worry you are comparing to bikes that can’t take 38c tires Some of the gravel bikes I’m looking at weigh more than the Domane, and they aren’t as comfortable on the long rides I prefer. And I’m not the type that gets hung up over 19+lb vs 18+lb vs 17+lb bike weight. I like previous Roubaix, but not a fan of future shock.
Sure, just an observation with a few models reviewed. Far from extensive comparison. Just noting that there is a fairly big difference from the older to new gen model.
I have a Felt F4X that I run one set of wheels with tubeless slicks and the other set has either gravel or cross tires (up to 40mm, which I would recommend for gravel comfort) on it (depending on the season). Since getting this bike setup my dedicated road bike now sits on the trainer for indoor workouts only. It really is the best of both worlds!
The 2020 Revolt Advanced model with 105 is full hydraulic brakes…
I love my 2019 Revolt 0. I think I have more road miles on it this year than I have on my Seven. I’ll be using it with gravel tires, Teravail Cannonballs in 700x42, mounted for outdoor rides this winter. If I needed to cut down my bikes to one, it would be the Revolt with an extra set of wheels with GP5000 TLs in 700x32 mounted.
As much as I like my Revolt, If I were starting out right now, I would jump straight to a Seven Evergreen SL and never look back.
Plenty of clearance on all sides. Haven’t had time to ride it at all but the wheels held air. They were a bit of a pain to seat but I was just using a floor plump. It probably would have been a cinch with a compressor. I also made the mistake of getting 32mm valves and didn’t take into account the rubber seal on the inside that takes up like 6mm. So it’s a bit short.
A new Domane would be a decent option if you are looking for a road bike with the option for occasional gravel in mind, otherwise id steer clear of road bikes and look at pure gravel or CX bikes. Some 35mm gravel kings and you would be away, the 38’s may even fit but it may be a bit too tight. Worth trying
Personally I prefer a bigger tyre though, gives a lot more options for fun. Of course you can ride anything on smaller tyres, but you can get away with a bit more on the bigger ones
Alright Team, All of your input has been saweet! I’ve looked at hundreds of pages of info about all these bikes. Here are links to my top 4 options. In order of my preference right this second. Note that if you know a shop or site that has a better deal on these than I have posted… please link it. Here Goes:
