My family’s had a number of them since 2016, both MTB and cross, and they’ve been great, but, especially over the past few years, not sure the value is there anymore. They don’t make cross bikes anymore. The Process line is good but there better bikes for the same money now. Honzo is a great trail hard tail.

Just to clarify, Giants will not be in Dicks locations…at least not yet. They will be sold through the Specialty retailers under the Dicks corporate umbrella such as Moosejaw, Public Lands and House of Sport. There are only a couple dozen of these locations.

The real question is whether this is just an initial move intended to soften the blow of Giant eventually being in Dick’s. If this move is designed to help Giant with their inventory woes, a couple dozen stores ain’t gonna do much.

The industry fight over floor space is now critical for survival…limited demand combined with huge inventory levels means whoever gets more floor space / new distribution gains a huge advantage.

Who is giant displacing in this move?

The industry played stupid games… what happens next?

Not certain if they are displacing anyone with the specialty retailers or just adding to their mix…but if they roll Giant out to Dick’s, I would assume GT would be out eventually.

It’s interesting. My last few road bikes have all been Specialized. Unfortunately, they’ve likely priced me out of the market, and I love my Giant Revolt, so was planning to look at their road bikes this year…but I had to google to find a local dealer who sells Giant since Spesh and Trek went on their buying spree. Same is true for Cannondale, Cervelo, Pinerello, etc. The local shops within 30 minutes of me are now exclusively selling Spesh and Trek.

Giant is probably displacing Cannondale in the Dicks brand stores. Right now, Cannondale is the high-end brand in Dick’s “Public Lands” (dumb name) stores.

Which is probably why you see Giant kicking the tires with Dick’s…when Specialized and Trek started buying up IBD’s and / or opening factory stores, Giant lost a decent chunk of floor space.

Now they have excess inventory and limited doors to push it through…

At least that is the only scenario I can see where Giant risks sticking their thumb in the IBD’s eye…

Maybe Dicks is going to shed that dumb-as-it-is-ubiquitous name “Public Lands” and take on Moosejaw for those stores. Search “Public Lands” and see what you get. Then search “Moosejaw.” Case closed.

Just don’t search Dicks

Boom!

Or leave out an L in “Public Lands”

And definitely don’t add “Giant” to that search… :upside_down_face:

I like how earnest the discussion was over the ramifications of selling Giant at a big box store. That’s a valid topic, but I just assumed the OP was a Giant Dicks joke.

I’m positive it was. @Power13 just took it in a whole new direction!

interesting, I believe they were owned by Walmart, doesn’t look like Walmart would need money but maybe they don’t make enough with Moosejaw

I didn’t realize that, but now that you mention it, the one I go to is in Bentonville.

Don’t buy Kona. They were recently bought out buy a PE firm and are gutting the company. My hanger move cracked the frame on a trip when i was driving by their HQ in Bellingham. Their employees told me normally it would be covered under warranty since the hanger isnt actually working and they know its a common issue but their arent allowed to warranty anything. When the employees are telling me to sell it and just get another brand you know its bad.

Normally i dont care if a PE firm buys a company but they clearly are trying to strip any value quickly.

That explains a lot. Similar thing happened with Canyon US. Costumer service and coverage went downhill since they were bought.

Usually acquisitions by PE firms are just a way to kill the golden goose.
