I saw this on Instagram and it gave me the idea to start a thread showing the weirdest, wildest, hardest, insanely stupid(?) workouts pros do. Partly for fun. Partly to see if anybody wants to try them.
Saw one of Jonas Abrahamsen’s workouts. Doesn’t look super crazy, meaning I’m going to try it. It’s 8x8, ramping sets from 90% to 110%. So 8 intervals, it looks like he did 90/90/95/95/100/100/105/110. Which on the surface doesn’t look too crazy since the first half is below threshold. I guess the magic happens in the back end when you’re doing fatigued sets above threshold. His threshold is around 440W so his final set was like 490W. For a full ramp I was thinking 90/93/96/99/102/105/108/110.
Even though that day’s “workout” was 8x8 at threshold, which is quite a pull, it is worth noting that was only 1/6th of the overall ride: a 6h+ ride with 3,710m climbing at 295W NP.
For Jonas the overall ride was 66% IF and 3,409 kJ
Or, to crassly interpret that Monday ride, about the same as one whole week of a typical TR Base Phase Mid Volume plan.
8x8 ramping like that is a mental game as much as a physical one. That 490W finish is insane, though! For mortals, 90/93/96/99/102/105/108/110 sounds brutal but doable. Who’s feeling masochistic enough to give it a go?
One part of these workouts is also that the pros have a different level of fatigue resistance and also genetically are able to soak things up differently compared to us mortals.
It might not be a feasible workout for non-pros.
While it might be possible to finish the workout, it might be more fatiguing than beneficial.
With that said, going with a 4x8 och 6x8 might be more feasible, with a similar ramp
