COVID-19: US races/cycling events that have been cancelled

Barry Roubaix officially rescheduled for October 10.

I think these races should continue but change the format. Everyone gets an individual start (TT style) separated by 10 minutes and no drafting strictly enforced. You must stay in your car until your start time, no warmups. Groups of more than 2 cyclists will be penalized 5 minutes per infraction. Fastest time wins!

Given what is currently going on in Europe (complete lock down of full countries) continuing with events is just irresponsible at this point and will put people at risk.

My comment was in jest.

Do the math on your suggestion - it doesn’t work.

1 person every 10 minutes = 6 people / hour starting. 54 people start over 8 hours.

100 people would take almost 16 hours just for start slots.

Never was good at math… every 9 minutes then for 24 hours.

Not USA, but the Tour of Mansfield has just been canceled. :frowning:

At this point I think it’s safe(?) to say everything everywhere has been cancelled.

Not yet - the Austin Rattler marathon MTB race in Burnet, TX is supposedly still on. And the Land Run gravel race in Oklahoma happened this weekend. I’d say Texas will be the last to admit defeat.

Newb question: have all the Oly qualifying races been done?

I don’t know about road but I’m fairly certain the first UCI XCO race was going to make up a significant portion of the qualifying points. It isn’t until until May 23rd so maybe this will all be over by then but I’m not holding my breath. Also, as of now, USAC is preventing all of their athletes from traveling to Europe so that combined with European countries being put on lockdown things aren’t looking great.

Regardless of whether TT style racing could solve the social distancing issue, there are at least a few other significant areas of risk:

  • Registration/check-in: Many race promoters rely on same day registration for funds to support their race/event and, if not, need to provide help desks at minimum for registration issues
  • Neutral zone bottle hand-off for longer races
  • Bathrooms

UCI and IOC have already stated that all rankings are on hold, so it’s a level playing field in terms of qualifying or selection.

EVERYTHING on the road calendar here in the Phoenix, AZ area is canceled. Darn it! I’ve been working so hard too. Have had a really solid last 3 weeks of training. And nothing to train for now.

Just train to get faster  When events open back up then build specialty accordingly

Burnet County prohibited gatherings of over 50 yesterday, so Rattler should be cancelled before too long. I’m not sure what they are waiting on, probably trying to figure out what to do on refunds/deferrals, etc.

Here’s a race that’s currently going on. Given the nature of the race, “self isolation” is an inherent part

Even though this race was months away, Redmond Derby Days has been canceled.

Although they don’t say it was covid-19 related, I’m only guessing its part of the reason next to budget/finance as all the focus has been getting a grip on this virus.

The MidSouth just happened. It was gloriously muddy. A lot of people deferred their registration to next year and the mood leading up to the start seemed kind of subdued. That may have just been because of the rain leading up to the big day. But there was a lot of excitement once the gun went off.

Also, here in Texas, the Red River Riot is coming up in a few weeks. Not cancelled yet, and since I’m already signed up for it I’m waiting to see.
