COVID-19, Quarantine, and Adjusting Training Plans

Just block your boss and any colleagues!

Got the call last night…2 months off.

I’m both excited & freaked out by such a large block of free time (kinda like summer vacation as a kid!). I’ll take a day and mull over my next move.

Yeah, leaving the office last night felt like heading into Xmas break…”OK, see you in a couple of weeks”. Very strange to have this much time off…I’ll still be WFH, but it will obviously be very different.

I’m freaked out by a) not wanting to waste such a once in a lifetime opportunity (aka squander the unprecedented training time), and b) having something go terribly wrong on an outdoor ride — if the bike breaks, no shops are open to fix it/sell parts; if I break…I’m sucking up valuable medical resources (as well as contributing heavily to point a) ).

Damned if you do, etc. :man_shrugging:

Might be a perfect time to hit the velodrome.

Timing is important.

As of right now, the hospitals are not jam packed. So there’s a window of opportunity right now that may close in a few weeks.

Somewhat ironic because the very word “quarantine” originated in Venice (Italy) when it was one of the world’s major trading ports. The city was so rich they built a hospital/prison on an isolated island to house those displaying illness for forty days, hence quarantine - forty.

I missed my first event (a ‘C’) due to a broken collarbone. The organiser of my next event at Easter (a ‘B’) is still hoping it will go ahead but it’s now very doubtful since all pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants have been ordered to close here in the UK so the number of refreshment/restocking points has dropped and having 80 or so dirty mountain bikers wandering around the countryside probably isn’t the best idea. My first ‘A’ event for the year at the end of May has also been cancelled and I can see that the rest of the year is likely to go the same way.

Hello paincave my old friend,
I’ve come to sweat with you again.

Just to point out, we all could, and a majority most likely will, get sick. Or loved ones. It’s really how sick.

I was quite gung ho about it being a training block - reality biting here in Ireland!

I would argue it is a question of timing…too many people at one time and we overwhelm the system. Flatten the curve enough and we can handle it much better…more importantly, we can buy time and hopefully develop a vaccine. If we can do that, we avoid a whole bunch of people getting sick in the first place.

As a Floridian, this is what we go through every time a hurricane is approaching. Panic and fear of the unknown, grocery stores being wiped clean of essentials and a tension in the air that is unbearable for anyone with even the slightest anxiety or concern.

Here’s another good one…

In the place where I live, there is a solid Asian population. There are about 5 different grocers in town, 1 of them being Asian-centric. Today we drive by the non-Asian grocers and they are lined up outside all the way into the parking lot with people @ 6ft markers etc.; we’re on our way to the Asian grocer. There’s no line up, there’s no panic, there’s no hoarding, there’s stock, there’s almost no customers, the staff are taking all the same health precautions as the rest of the world…but because it’s the “CHINA VIRUS!!!”, no non-Asian person will go near those grocers. Easy pickin’s for us!

Sinking to new lows with some sorry ass story telling LOL. I literally just spit out my coffee, where I live there are a couple of huge asian stores and they are hit just as hard as the non-asian stores. Nobody running around here staying away from stores or Chinese take-out screaming “CHINA VIRUS” just because of race.

One for you all to have a think about.

My employer (local government) informed us golf course greenkeepers that we shall be receiving training next week to help the cemetery staff with the expected increase in burials.

To say i’m a little freaked out at the moment would be a f*cking understatement.

Merely observation of sorry ass behaviour, highlighting the power of fear over logic.

WFH since 3\16. I don’t feel as fresh being at home all day. I’m in SE Michigan, and COVID-19 hasn’t hit this part of the US as hard as New York.

I don’t race, but I was planning on taking up a sprint tri in September, and now all pools are closed. I have restarted running after a 2-year struggle with Plantar Fasciosis (or Fasciitis depending on whom you ask). I was planning on restarting swimming too, but all pools are closed now.

I’ve been doing the TR LV plans for a while now. All local cycling events are cancelled till May and possible end of June or even July.

I’ve been feeling a bit fatigued being on TR, and might need to sub some TR rides with Zwift as I don’t have clothing to ride below 40 deg F\4 deg C. Yes, it does get that cold here, and the locals call it “spring”.

I guess I will have to start some home-based strength training regimen. I don’t have any weights of any kind. Decisions, decisions…

This is what I’m working to. I’ve just picked up a new bike (Tarmac SL6 Pro) so am following a modified TBHV1 outdoors (modified by the inclusion of one indoor VO2 session per week). At the moment my area doesn’t seem too hard hit so before every ride I’m checking the latest available data and making an assessment of risk / reward.

When local numbers start to increase I’ll likely head back to solely indoor work, probably just as the 2.5+ hour rides start appearing on my plan…

I think I will go back to SSBHVII for the forseeable future with a Zwift race one a week.

My target event was officially postponed, hoping to run in “late summer”. So, I’m targeting the end of August, and have restarted an eight-week SSB modified plan before going back into build and eventually crit specialty. I’d like to get the FTP up a little bit again, so this is a good chance to take a step back from the short power ledge and build the engine on top of the VO2max work I’ve put in the last two months.

I’ve traveled and lived up and down the left coast for 3 decades, apparently the progressives and Asians in your corner of the 3rd rock from the sun have decided to boycott Asian markets because

Would appreciate links to news articles covering such a travesty against other people/businesses because of race.

A general search and the very first offering from the Googs:

A more refined search closer to home:

My local populace is heavily numbered by old money colonialists so it’s not that terribly surprising. And FWIW, Asians are not boycotting their own business.

Again, fear tumps logic.

And speaking of trump fearing logic:

How does all this contribute to adjusting my training plan? Since there’s no racin’ going on and weight is a forgotten factor, I’ll get to have all the recovery day cafe rides I want down to Chinatown for a quiet and peaceful Vietnamese coffee or two and many flavours of bao.
