COVID-19, Quarantine, and Adjusting Training Plans

Good time to shop for a new bike. Anything to get you out of the house!

I plan on taking advantage of the panic to go swimming when it would have been too busy. The Chlorine in the pool kills the virus, but hopefully not many people know that.

Outdoor cycling is no good where I live anyway, but if it gets less slippy I shall go running more as people with dogs should disappear mostly.

Organization has nothing to do with it…China is an authoritarian regime and they have the ability to enforce mass quarantines on their population. Civil rights are not a consideration and Xi is President For Life. They can do as they wish.

Try rolling into Seattle with the Army or National Guard and locking down the population and see what happens.

I work from home, but travel a lot and it often feels harder than back in my old office days. So, a travel shutdown is just fine by me, and I’ll also be able to enforce my own shut-down on all but the most mission-critical travel without anyone batting an eye. Thanks, COVID-19… really.

The main changes to my training plan will be more sleep, more consistency, not having to haul my 45 pound trainer around the country and, with DST coming this weekend, some nice long outdoor endurance rides.

And yeah, we’re going on a food-hoarding mission tomorrow, no doubt.

In Seattle here, working for one of the tech companies…“recommended wfh” for an indeterminate length of time (I suspect at least the month of March).

I’ve started by adding extra Z2 on days when I wouldn’t have had the time before, but planning to make sure I’m rested for my vo2max. I’m also thinking about choosing slightly higher tss versions of my planned workouts.

Having said all that, I’m a little concerned about over estimating my ability to recover…so I don’t want to ramp up too fast.

I was supposed to be at a big trade show for the next week, with a ton of prep this week leading into it. Cancelled yesterday because of covid-19. I’d just finished TBMV2, and was resigned to having to take almost 2 weeks off before starting 3. With my new-found 2 weeks, I’m just rolling right into the next phase. Yay! Bonus, this weekends local weather is going to be unseasonably nice, so I can finally try an outdoor workout on my bolt.

Train with mask. Do low intensity rides so you dont breath that much

Same, and I think I’m gonna do a couple Z2 hours outside tomorrow. At the least, given that it isn’t airborne, etc, I view at as some potentially good outdoor riding time with possibly reduced traffic. Also, my gym is closed at the moment anyway, so I guess it’s some forced HTFU for me with the somewhat better weather.

What I’m hearing is that we need a list of workouts with lowest calorie expenditure for highest physiological benefit… :grinning:

Just a gentle reminder, quarantine isn’t curfew at least not in most places. Lombardy is a state in Northern Italy under quarantine - no travel in or out - but people aren’t forced to stay in their homes.

I’m setting up a stand to sell hand sanitizer and masks instead of lemonade

On a serious note, fortunately, I can work from home, so no work day would be missed, plus I have ton of leave on tap, if push come to shove.

As far as training goes, I’d plan to continue as scheduled or do some longer zone 2 rides if I had to ration.

Guys, just an update from Italy.
The whole country is from this morning in quarantine mode.
Needs to be said that it is a lighter than Wuhan kind of quarantine. You can still leave home for proved work reasons or to go and buy food.
Outdoor cycling however shall not be done. Even if done alone. Risk of getting injured and being hospitalized has to be completely avoided as hospitals and intensive care unites are struggling to cope with a dramatic increase of people needing artificial ventilation.
Heads up and long live to smart trainers!

Never thought I’d see the day when western democracies were quarantining their populations en masse.

Given that it’s either that or a global pandemic … :man_shrugging:

Oh, I’m not saying it is the wrong decision…just an indication of how serious the situation is.

I’m in quarantine as well, working from home.
Currently in a build block with FTP efforts, my week is usually 90’ of structured work 3 days a week + 1 free (but easy) ride + 10hours outdoor during the weekend.
I’m thinking of adding 1hr of z1/z2 fasted rides in the morning every day + zwift races and endurance in the weekend as outdoor cycling is currently “outlawed”

Any tips on adjusting nutrition and getting the most out of those fasted rides? carb breakfast / carb lunch / protein dinner?

I wonder how long before we see local races cancelled

I was wondering the same thing. So far my weekend race is still open for registration. So there’s that. :crossed_fingers:

London is looking like 2 weeks till we get shut in at this rate.

I’m ordering a second ANT+ dongle and getting ready to zwift 3 times a day

I’m effectively in this situation as well - 99% of my work has evaporated pretty much overnight, so I’m basically at home all day. I just switched to SS base HV and got very focused on recovery.

I’m actually off to Mallorca middle of next week for 5 days (unless something throws a spanner in that works) so will hopefully at least get some sunshine and outdoor miles before the world goes into isolation

Everyone is going to be fast as hell in 2021 with the amount of training people are going to be able to put in this year
