So there might be some slight confusion, this thread is about the GP5000 All Season TR or GP5000 AS TR. Not the GP5000 S TR.
The GP5000 S TR replaced the GP5000 TL. The TL had an airtight liner, which meant you could set it up without sealant. I don’t know why you’d do that though. The GP5000 S TR is an “upgraded” version, without the liner and needs sealant. The GP5000 AS TR that this thread is about is the All Season option, which is a slightly beefier version of the standard S TR, meant for late fall - early spring training conditions.
The GP5000 S TR should be everything that the TL was, so if you liked the TL you should like the TR. Conti of course claims the TR is much better (20% faster) but I’m not sure if that holds up. Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR review - Reviews - BikeRadar - Also Bicycle Rolling Resistance noticed some interesting differences between the tanwall and non version if it matters. (I have the S TR tan walls, and I like them a lot.)
If you had flats on the GP5000 TL or were riding in rougher conditions you’d probably want the tire this thread is talking about, the GP5000 AS TR. I tried to google for a media outlets review of the AS, and it looks like there aren’t any out yet. But, this thread does show up in the google search haha.
No confusion. I was asking about the S TR, because I was wondering whether there was actually a need for a more durable / cold weather version of it.
I didn’t have any flats with the TL, but as soon as I changed tires to another brand for wheel compatibility reasons, flat city. I considered the S TRs but decided they were too expensive and hard to find at the time.
Ah, gotcha. I guess it just depends on the riding you do and where you live then. Personally I think a new pair of S TRs will be as durable as the AS TRs, but maybe they wear faster and you get less mileage? I’m not completely convinced that where I live the winter roads are any nastier than the summer roads.
Having said that… I usually run the GP 4 Seasons in the winter purely for peace of mind. So I’m likely to switch to the AS TRs next winter if they are easily available and well reviewed. I hate being cold so dealing with a flat on a winter ride is a nightmare for me.
My experience having used both the TL and TR versions of the GP5000 tyre is that the newer TR version is a little more fragile than the old version. Still a good tyre but more prone to punctures on UK roads.
Yeah but S TR is a High performance Race Tire, while the AS is an all season Training Tire unless you have some very specific use case A cheaper training tire makes just more sense to me…
Agree. I found the TL to be almost bomb proof. I did a 4200 mile self supported race with zero flats on crappy roads. I got sidewall flats near the bead twice on the TR that took a lot of time and trouble for me. I am hoping the new All Season version will be closer to the TL. It’s only a few watts slower than the TR.
It BTW performed phenomenal in BRRs testing, testing grippier, more puncture resistant on the side wall, and faster, than both the Corsa Next and the Specialized T2/T5:
price is really high right now, priced higher than the 2BR T2/T5, and I bought 2 pack of the N.EXT for the price of an All Season TR. About to install the N.EXT, its only 1.5W higher rolling resistance per tire, and half the price. Hope to see the price come down over time, likely be running these Vittoria until October or November.
Hardly a training tire given it’s only a couple of watts off the GP5000 S TR. Much more a slightly tougher race tire for courses with gravel, cobbles or just crap surfaces.
