I can’t speak to chamois shape of Assos vs LG. Also try Gore and Endura.
Which ones have you got? Disappointed Long time Assos shorts fan here. Wore my S5s transparent…
. Got an S7 as a replacement. No good. Whatever magic the S5s had the S7 hasn’t. At least for me. Dunno whether it is the lower panel count or the ‘golden gate’ thing with the chamois stitching but now they are pressing in all the wrong places. So you may want to stipulate there?
I also prefer Assos’ chamois and have a problem with Castelli’s chamois being too low in the front. FWIW, I also have bibs from Rapha, Giordana and Mavic that I get along well with.
One time I found large T.Equipe bibs in stock at Swiss Iconic. Bought 3 pairs.
Good point. I’m on the S7 chamois and get along with them well. Thankfully I didn’t try the S5 or maybe I’d feel like I was missing out ![]()
Do you recall which ones you got from Rapha?
I’ve had really good luck with Panache bibs. Really nice quality, awesome chamois and while not cheap, far less than Assos and IMO every bit as good.
Pro line for sure. Maybe pro light aero? I got them in a store when they were blowing them out.
One thing I’d note is I get Assos in large. But the Rapha bibs are medium and I could probably do small. Assos L is more like M in Giordana and Mavic too.
I’ve always wanted to try Panache. But they aren’t necessarily cheaper than Swiss Iconic. I paid around $110 for my T Equipes.
It’s good to see a recommendation for Panache. How does their sizing line up with Assos? Panache medium is like Assos large?
I would say that a good size comparison. Panache seems to run very, very slightly smaller but not as much as Assos and some other euro styles. I have a few pair and absolutely love them. I have found Panache to be a great moderate priced bib with all the quality of far more expensive brands, plus their style is really awesome!
I’m a fan of the Funkier brand. Chain Reaction often have them on sale, or go the Funkier website and click on the Outlet tab. Just bough 4 pair for $19 ea, $4 socks, $19 jersey. All good quality stuff. Bibs have more panels than I can count and fit like a glove. I’ve used DHB from Chain Reaction , and like the Funkiers better
I’m going to suggest NOT using cheapish shorts. I just did a 1 hour TR session in a pair of PI shorts with the Select chamois and it wasn’t nearly as pleasant as PI w/Pro our Elite. The longer I ride the more I gravitate to the higher end chamois and shorts.
This year was the first time I dropped some cash for Assos and they backup the promise as do the Pro Chamois PIs. Gore and Craft have been good to me as well, but I won’t ride cheaper shorts ever again. Not for long road rides or TR sessions anyway.
Has anyone tried MTB liner for indoor/trainer riding? I know you’re supposed to wear baggies over them in real life, but can they work indoors?
I like my Funkier bibs as well! They’re as good if not better as my DHB Classics
I use the Patagonia liners with chamois and like them. Most chamois in liners are not that great but they are less expensive and the non-chamois material is thinner and therefore cooler.
I’ve had good luck with $40 Sponeed shorts from Amazon.
Yes. These are great. I have 5 pairs and they feel nearly as good as my expensive ones and I think they look pretty nice as well (in my preferred grey or black colors). The jerseys are pretty good as well, but I like the Spotti ones even better as the fit is a bit tighter, and I think they are a little less expensive. If I’m going to ride 6 days a week, I want to have 6 full kits. Wash them all at end of week in washing machine delicate cycle, and (the horror!) I dry them in there also on delicate.
Never go cheap on bibs… FACT
IF you have to watch the pennies, wear your best stuff on the trainer. As you dont have much flexibility to freewheel or stand whilst on a trainer you need the good stuff.
The value in the good stuff comes in the padding, moisture removal and hidden stitching when you dont move for between 1-3 hours.
Sweat pools and gathers everywhere there is a crease, and no air flow to dissipate and/ or dry.
I’ve gotten to the point where I only like to wear Assos. I’d go for a cheaper trainer set of bibs if they had an Assos type chamois. The Assos chamois has these foam strips underneath the chamois.
Does such a thing exist?
