Chain Waxing Tutorial

Killer :rage:

I got that waxer a couple weeks ago. I’m pretty convinced it’s identical to the Silca unit.

I’ve used it a couple times (removed the metal inner pan). It’s noticeably smaller than a mini crockpot, and it’s somewhat annoying to cram a chain in and then give it a good swish, but it’s doable. Temp control and rapidity of heating is great. Somewhat annoyingly it only shows Fahrenheit temp, but I can do math.

I think these were the chains zfc was trying to do chain stripper testing on and had to abandon as the tolerances were so far out. Not necessarily a problem and I use them myself, but don’t be surprised if one measures nearly 0.5% when new

I would not call it degresing in reality, I just use a degreaser to clean it carefully.
I get a cleaner results than with just water (that I use for lower grade dirtyness)

I do similar sometimes with a splash of washing up liquid, which is basically the same. That and a brush over gets a surprising amount of crap off even a clean looking chain previously sitting in clear water after rinsing

For those that live in California how and what are you degreasing your new chains?

I’ve tried a bunch of different ways and I can’t seem to get it crispy clean.

Ceramic Speed Clean for drive trains and its ZeroFrictionCycling recommended and IMHO its awesome. 10 minutes max and your new chain is degreased.

No five step process with acetone and alcohol and ultrasonic cleaners with degreasers?

Between the soaking and scrubbing I spent four hours cleaning the last new chain.

Soak and agitate for 5 minutes, then hot water rinse until the water is clean. 10 minutes tops. I used a glass jar with 5 chains and half a bottle.

I made this switch from mineral spirits and dehydrated alcohol to UFO Clean and it’s so much better. The hardest part is remembering to get a Gatorade bottle.

Oh I’m ordering that shit right now.

I even tried to reclean it after 1500 miles. still not clean.

thanks!

You can clean 5 chains per 100 ml per ZFC.

Is this it?

yes, I buy it here:

when there is $99 in my cart for free shipping.

oh, and in the past I used the spray bottle for on-bike cleanup of the chain and for initial degreasing (worked pretty well!). Back when I was using drip wax. But now I’m hot waxing so the chain comes off.

So you pour it out of the 500ml spray bottle into a jar with a brand new chain, leave for 30 min, shake up, the wax?

Thanks!

1 chain? 100ml in a large glass jar (Dollar Store?) with flat bottom. Doing that you can clean 5 chains but not all at the same time.

I’ve used mineral spirits, boiling water, with a final alcohol rinse. It didn’t seem to take hours. Boiling water seems to get that last bit of grease between the rollers.

Using solvents is messy though. I’m temped by the strip chip or some other oil eater technology.

Any difference between that and the black? It’s the same price but twice the size.

CeramicSpeed: UFO Clean Drivetrain - Black - 1L

That looks like the first two bottles I bought about 2 years ago. At the old price.

Mineral spirits and 91 percent rubbing alcohol.

But with the Silca chip out, I’d try that.
