Blood thinners - Xarelto and side effects

I’m hoping to tap into some group wisdom here. I’m presently on Xarelto after 2 unprovoked blood clots in the past 4 years. I’m finding the side effects hard to deal with and i was wondering if anyone else is on a different blood thinner they would recommend. I’m back into see my GP next week but i’d like t be armed with some opinions.

I was prescribed Eliquis (5mg twice a day) in April after a recent blood clot. Other than excess bleeding when cut and bruising (likely the case with any blood thinner) I can’t say I’ve noticed any other side effects, and haven’t had to alter the types of foods I eat. I’m hoping to come off of it in the next month or two, but I can say it hasn’t impacted me negatively other than what I mentioned.

I’ve been on anti-coagulants for ~15 years now…first warfarin and for the last 3 years, Eliquis.

Never had any side effects from either, but would absolutely not recommend warfarin. Too much of a hassle to monitor your INR all the time. I had one instance where mine got dangerously high (>6) and I had blood in my urine.

Did they run any testing to determine if you have any genetic conditions? For example, I found out that I have Factor V Leiden following a DVT and PE.

What side effects from the Xarelto are you experiencing?

I’ve been on Xarelto for over 5 years, and can’t think of any side effects (apart from excess bleeding).

Backache, itching, swelling in my feet, ankles. It’s been miserable.

From what i hear, Eliquis may be a good bet. Thanks for sharing the information.

Jeez, that does sound awful. I would definitely check out Eliquis. Added bonus is that there is a reversal agent for it now, so if (god forbid) you ever have a bad crash, etc. there are options to help deal with any bleeding. That is one of the reason my doc kept me on warfarin for so long - there was no reversal agent for the next-gen thinners.

Thanks, Doc has switched me over to Eliquis after some encouragement from me. Hopefully the side effects will subside quickly.

I have been diagnosed with two PE’s 5 days ago, first three days unbearable pain. Now, thats gone. Get very short of breath especially talking. Little bit of coughing up blood in the am but not much. Twice it was old clots. My questions are is the blood typical, when will i get my breath back. And when to start exercising and breathing exercises. Thanks

First, glad you are OK. PE’s are scary stuff and can deadly.

Second - work with your doctors to determine a return to activity. I was never symptomatic, so was able to return somewhat quickly, but you need to be careful given your symptoms.

Take your time and don’t rush back.

More importantly, did they determine a root cause for the PE’s?

Not yet still doing tests. Thanks for reply.

Good luck with your recovery, it took me a few weeks to get my lungs back so fingers crossed. Be prepared to never find out the cause, i’ve had 2 clots now and they are both unprovoked. I did have a 3rd i think but i invoked bro science to cure it, less said the better and i’m never telling my wife…lol.

Much better day today. CT yesterday showed a bit of a collapsed lung. Thankfully a cyst on my liver and not cancer. They still don’t know where they came from. Hopefully breathing better soon .
