Bike camera - commuting etc

Hi, has anyone got a suggestion for a bike camera for use when commuting and riding in general? If it can pair up as a camera for recording footage when MTB’ing thatd be a bonus but no problem if not.

Looking mainly at the cycliq ones or the garmin varia rct715

thanks

I’ve had generally bad luck with the GoPro cameras, usually their batteries die. Their warranty seems good, but had to fight them to get 2 newer failed batteries replaced.

Although I did get an 11 Black, and spare batteries for a scuba trip, and they worked okay. The batteries are their ‘Enduro’ and I was surprised how quickly they died in the colder water, but I got some great shots of sharks and barracuda anyway. But I’ve got a 2, a 3, 4, 7, and I think I had a 9. I liked the idea of the GoPro, but the execution has been interesting. I figured with the 11, that I’d also get a bunch of spare batteries (starting with the Costco kit with 2) to swap out, but you can’t swap them underwater. One annoyance, which I’m sure is common with other bike mountable cameras, is the sound the camera picks up from the bike frame. I did a few videos using music instead of any of the audio from the cameras which turned out great. Putting one on your bike getting the rear view has been an interesting perspective.

I tried Cycliq and had to replace multiple Fly 12 and Fly6 cameras under warranty. Dealing with Cycliq, which is in Australia, from the U.S was a horrible experience. I gave up and will never again buy a Cycliq product. Take a look at comments under DC Rainmakers reviews of Cycliq products. They are old reviews, and I can’t say if anything has changed. Interestingly, I bought a Fly6 for my wife on Amazon so I would be able to return it if it too failed. It arrived non-functional and went back. Amazon no longer sells Cycliq products. I wonder why?

I now use a varia 515 w/o a camera. I’ve been waiting for Garmin front camera and an updated Garmin rear camera before committing.

Been out for a while:

Ive had the first gen since circa 2016

But the newer ones look cool, expensive but cool:

Garmin discontinued the VIRB around 4 years ago. I’m waiting for a Varia-type front light/safety camera. I use the Varia UT-800 front light now. That and the Varia RTL 515 work really well with my Garmin Edge.
