Belgian Waffle Asheville 2020

I agree, the only area which usually floods along the route is the corner of Big Willow and River Rd. But this area drains quickly, once the rain stops.
You certainly will have washed out gravel on roads and the gravel sections might have some additional rut features added to them. Overall the weather forecast for the weekend looks pretty good.

Not local but I rode a gravel portion of the course last month on WTB Byway 34s no real problem. Was going to keep them on but same as you with all the rain I’m rethinking this and may switch to Bontrager GR2’s, they’re on my cross bike so it’s a quick swap.

Do any of the locals know how long they typically close the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mt. Mitchell for severe weather. I was hoping to get up there on Friday.

That’s crazy! They are supposed to have a lot of rain on Friday, going to be a mud fest in places. Then again I’m not from there but a buddy of mine who lives there said it might be a little sketchy in some of the gravel sections.

Depends on why the closed the Parkway. Closings are unpredictable, can be hours up to weeks. They usually have a recording on their phoneline. Check before you go.

Local weather doesn’t show rain for Friday beside the usual afternoon Thunderstorm which is hit or miss depending where it comes down. I would expect the course to be a little wet with some short muddy sections around Bell Mountain south of Lake Summit. The climb up from Green River to Mount Pinnacle shouldn’t be too bad, but there certainly will be water run off ruts in the gravel. Generally expect gravel on the roads and a lot of tree debris as well.

I am not local to the area (I am in charlotte). Does this affect BWR? Seems like the entire region has been hit hard.

Not sure how it affects BWR, but I can tell ya … the volume of rain, wind, and damage we’ve had in the Piedmont (just east of Asheville) has been tremendous.

Hit and miss thunderstorms are typical for the area. Nothing unusual is in the forecast for Friday or Saturday.

cool, I am also hearing that the hendersonville area didn’t get hit as hard the past couple days.

The Davidison River campground off 276 in Brevard (near The Hub and Ecusta Brewing) was flooded. FWIW, the campground is right along the river in the floodplain.

Updated BRP info – looks like Mt Mitchell might be off the table. You’ll want to call ahead.

Blue Ridge Parkway closures: Alternate routes needed as Fred dumps rain, downs trees

According to the park website:
Mount Mitchell should re-open Thursday, August 19th, around 8:00am.

The Blue Ridge Parkway will remain closed south of the Park to Asheville. The only access will be from the north, via Hwy 80 to the Parkway.

As expected the junction of Big Willow and River Rd. is about 15 inches under water. But this will probably be gone by this afternoon. There is a short re-route through the neighborhood possible, but in my opinion this will clear by today.
