I have been using Favero Assioma pedals on my training bike setup on Tacx Galaxia rollers for approx 8 months. However I wanted to test some other pedals with no power meter. So I used virtual power and the difference was huge. My workout was steady zone 2 workout that was rated easy and I would have expected it to be easy, however at the prescribed power using virtual my heart rate was constantly high z4 bordering on z5. Is this difference normal is virtual power inaccurate or are the Assiomas inaccurate any ideas welcome.
Virtual power can be way innacurate, especially if there’s tyre slip on the rollers, but tests by GP Lama and DC Rainmaker etc rate the Assimoa’s. VP will be the inaccurate one.
Wanted to add that ideally you’d use one source of power to train for consistency. I’d trust the direct power meter of your Assioma’s over virtual power.
Here is some info on how Virtual Power works:
Yeah. Resistance on rollers can vary all over the place depending on tires, tire pressures, total rider weight, temperature… It’s way worse than on dumb wheel-on trainers where there’s only one tire creating resistance on a roller where the force of the roller against the tire is determined mechanically and a spin-down calibration can routinely be done. Even with that, and the applied “known” curve of the resistance unit, power can easily be way more off. In this case, absolute accuracy can be wack, but at least with care the results can be reproducible enough to be adequate for training purposes.
