I’ve got what I call my adventure rig, it’s an alloy, disc brakes, 11 x 1 GRX with 45mm Gravel King SK tyres. It gets used for everything; off road events, bike packing, casual rides, some audaxes and anything else when a deep wheeled carbon rim brake isn’t suitable.
In another long running thread I’ve detailed a really annoying intermittent clunk/ping when putting torque through it. As such after changing everything in the drivetrain bar cranks and hub shell she’s probably off for a new hub rebuild.
I’ve been umming and ahhing about running two wheel sets:
- one alloy with 45mm off road tyres (current hson set)
- 40mm carbon set with 32mm to 35mm road tyres
Clearly two dedicated sets will offer best performance but at a cost, space, maintenance. I’m just opening the ideas up for discussion:
- Fix alloy wheel and get second road set
- Run one set with the 45s and accept rolling losses - fine for casual stuff but I do want to do a 200km audax so might have bearing
- If running one set don’t stay with alloy (although they are light and strong) and upgrade to carbon.
