AIFTP and pacing in the real world

I have used FTP for pacing a 200K event the last two years. The first year I used the result from the “Half Monty” test on Wahoo, and last year i used the “old” AIFTP from TrainerRoad.

I understand that the new FTP number we see is a number that is used for training in TR, to prescribe workouts, progress you, etc. This is great, and I have no problems with this. But what will happen if I use this number to pace a 7+ hour ride? Does anyone know?

It is probably a few months before I can do outdoor rides longer than 2 hours because of the weather and problems with freezing water bottles…

Currently my plan is to do a Half Monty three weeks before my event and use this number.

I’ve used my old FTP to pace!

“Your fitness is a combination of FTP and your athlete level. But if you found you could hold your FTP for X minutes at a level 5 threshold, that will be the same in the new system. You could also self-adjust your FTP down/up until the AI gives you a level 5 if you have a one-time pacing question. That’s a way to get it answered in whatever system you used to use.“

This isn’t what you’re asking, but in the good old days we would put a little vodka in the bottle to prevent freezing. I’m not scientifically sure how well it worked, but it made the ride more fun!
