I’ll admit I am not fully up to speed on all AI ftp developments, but was somewhat surprised by a notification I recently received stating that if I didn’t utilize the TR AI ftp, I would no longer receive suggested workouts.
I feel quite confident that my current ftp of 300 is correct, if not a few watts low, so I saw no reason to accept TR’s suggestion of 284. I did 320w for 20’ in the middle of a ride recently, Intervals.icu was 306 based on that ride, I think TP was 305. Intervals.icu has even suggested some inflated values recently based on some shorter punchy efforts.
I ride outside mostly this time of year and do not utilize TR structure, but I had considered returning to self coaching this year to save a few $. That said, if I am forced to accept TR AI generated ftp, I am very unlikely to do so.
Curious if others have experienced the same and if it’s significantly impactful to programming and adaptations
I’m going to ask what might be a silly question but why not accept it?
It’s not used anywhere else, you can use the other FTP values for pacing on head unit. Just think of that number as the “TrainerRoad Workout Value” so it can do the suitable percentage for workouts.
When did you do 320 for 20 minutes? I can’t find it in your calendar, and your best 20-minute power from 2025, according to your power records page, is 270.
If that data isn’t getting into TR somehow, that could be why we’re not putting you at a higher FTP.
Let me know either way so we can get this sorted out!
I think they mean send a session base the value of FTP in TR… I.e actual watt targets… not a file as percentages of FTP which would be off the ftp set in the device/head unit
Right. Does the file say “Ten minutes at 200 watts” or “Ten minutes at 90% FTP”. The latter would work if you want to have different FTPs on your TR account and your head unit as suggested.
If it sends the actual target wattage (not the %FTP), then this would not work.
I’ve done some digging on my end, and it seems like I might have a good idea of what’s going on here.
One big thing to note here that I didn’t notice before is that you’re using different power sources when outside vs inside. Normally, this isn’t a huge deal if they read power similarly, but what I’m noticing now is that you’re regularly doing higher power figures during outside rides, but struggling on some workouts when riding inside.
I’d be curious for you to use your two power sources simultaneously to see if there is a discrepancy between them and how big it is.
Aside from power meters, I’d be curious to hear about your indoor setup. What’s the air temperature like in your training area? Do you have a good fan in place? Are you fueling indoor rides in the same way as outdoor ones? Do you feel equally motivated?
Regardless, a good way to fact-check your FTP would be to attempt the Marion workout to see how things feel. This shouldn’t feel like an all-out effort, and should feel manageable if your FTP is set correctly.
Let me know your thoughts on all of this and where you’d like to go next. I’m sure we can get things sorted out one way or another.
