AI FTP Detection and Outdoor Training

Hi all,

I noticed recently that I’m not able to get my estimated FTP unless I complete 10 indoor workouts. I was able to get an estimate regardless prior.

The problem is that I don’t have an indoor trainer and train outdoors exclusively. That also means I can’t take a ramp test because that seems to be indoor only, as well. Will this feature be implemented to take into account outdoor workouts?

Do a 20 minute test?

Or an @empiricalcycling baseline test, and just manually input your FTP. See below:

Hey @cyshimizu!

Yes, as you have noticed we have been refining the AI FTP detection model so some changes were made recently.

We’re working on another update that will allow athletes with no indoor rides and only outdoor rides to once again get AI FTP detections. It will be in our next update  .

Our goal is to constantly improve the accuracy and ease of use of AI FTP Detection. The latest round of updates aimed to increase the accuracy of AI FTP Detection for specific use cases. As a result of these updates, FTP detections are temporarily unavailable for athletes who only have outdoor rides.

Until then, don’t sweat it; AT will continue to guide your training with your Progression Level changes and Post workout surveys! :+1:

Hey @SarahLaverty,

Thanks for the reply. Really appreciate it! Enjoyed this week’s podcast. Keep it up.

Glad I saw this. I have only been doing outside workouts. Will this effect me, or is AI FTP only not working for people just “riding” outside? If this does effect me any idea on long until you’ll have this up and running again?

Please don’t say, “we’re working on it”. LOL.

Yes, your ability to use AI FTP Detection is impacted if you’re currently doing only outside rides and workouts.
As Sarah advised, we are working on another update that will allow athletes with no indoor rides, and only outdoor rides, to once again get AI FTP Detections.

That change will be part of our next update for AI FTP, and as you may know, we don’t like to make promises for timelines on releases like this. We’ll be sure to provide an update when available.

Gotcha. @IvyAudrain I’m curious, did you feel the AI wasn’t working well with outdoor workouts? I ask because over the last 3 months I’d seen some of the better gains that I’ve seen in a while (since I started doing primarily outdoor workouts). I’m hoping the gains were real, and not an issue with AI. I’ve been doing mostly outdoor workouts during that period, unless the weather drove me inside.

I guess I’m just curious why you offered it and then took it down?

As always, thanks for the great work. I love the TR product!

Congrats on the hard-earned gains!!

The AI FTP detections made for outside-only athletes are accurate.

We are refining the AI FTP detection model and that initial refinement came with some changes to the requirements needed to use AI FTP detection. We’re taking a stepped approach to expand the use cases and validate the data before moving the feature into production. Since you have completed Inside and Outside Workouts recently, you are able to use the current version of AI FTP detection.

Thank you, @cyshimizu!! I appreciate the feedback :purple_heart: .

@IvyAudrain Thanks! I appreciate the update.

Is this still true ?

It’s 2024.

Is FTP detection based on outdoor-only data implemented now?

I would love to skip buying an indoor trainer as I prefer to ride outside all year round, and buying a trainer for just doing FTP tests feels like waste of money.

Still the 10 inside TR workout requirement in place.

What AI FTP Detection Needs to Detect Your FTP

In order for AI FTP Detection to have enough data to accurately detect your FTP, you need a minimum of 10 completed TrainerRoad indoor workouts. If you haven’t completed enough workouts, don’t stress—you’ll see how many more you need when you click the button to use the feature. Once you’ve completed these 10 workouts, AI FTP Detection will analyze and incorporate all indoor and outdoor rides with power data, whether or not they’re TrainerRoad workouts.
