So, I am new to trainerroad and trying out an AI training plan.
It’s supposed to be custom to my history, fitness and goals.
It generated the plan, I am following it precisely up to this point, and the feedback has been always as planned/expected on the workout feeling.
But that a look at this example for next week.
It extended the threshold session from 45 minutes to 1h15 because “I’m ready for a longer workout”..
Shouldn’t it already know that from the start ?
And then, I am too fatigued to go on the next day 30 minutes endurance ride…
Well, maybe if you hadn’t extended the previous day by 30 minutes, I would not be too fatigued.
What should I follow ? Should I accept the recommendations over it’s own planned stuff ? (Even though I didn’t miss or exceed in any of the previous workouts ?)
Or should I stick to the “original” custom plan, as I didn’t deviate from it ?
This isn’t a sign of anything wrong—it’s just a sign that you’re getting fitter and able to handle more. Your plan has seen your performance at your original duration, and is suggesting stepping things up to keep pushing you, which is a great sign.
This change is optional, and you can click the 45:00 tab above the workout to keep your original duration.
As you surmised, this longer/harder threshold workout may leave you with some extra fatigue, which is why you’re expected to go Red that next day. Threshold workouts are generally more productive than easy endurance rides, so that’s why your plan suggests a longer threshold session at the expense of your endurance ride the next day. Again, this is an optional change, and if you feel fresh enough the next day it’s entirely your choice to keep the endurance ride instead.

So, it’s “better” for me to extend the workout, even if it means skipping the next day ?
I am assuming the updates to the plan are the more current ones.
What’s curious to me, is that the plan started last week. I have done 3 workouts in the plan, and it is already updating it ?
Maybe it’s meant to be like that, I was just surprised, I was expecting the original plan would already have progression taken into account, and updates only occur if I missed or rescheduled, or failed to do a workout.
Or find something “too easy”.
The AI features on the calendar are a bit more proactive and fine-tuned in real time than the features that build out your custom plan. Your plan is a starting point for your full season, but you’ll see it continually optimized and updated on the calendar as the AI finds opportunities to improve and tweak things. You can see the impact of each change projected forward on your calendar as you go.
Generally, harder workouts are more productive minute for minute than endurance workouts, so I tend to favor these at the expense of an easier ride when workout extension is suggested. But I also sometimes drag my endurance ride to a different day, or experiment with accepting/declining the change to see what impact it’ll have on my future workouts/predicted FTP.
