He forgot to mention it but @teddygram can facilitate the purchase.
Another quick update;
Just as I hoped, my brand new continental GP5000 STR in size 700x30 measures real 31.9-32mm at max pressure. This means great theoretical shape!
@teddygram Iām in Au, if I wanted to get a pair of the wheels youāve just had built up what do I ask for when I approach either the local rep or Nextie direct? BTW, Iāve got some Nextie XC mtb rims that are going on five years old and theyāre bombproof.
Hi @bmcd !
I finally have the final verdict on the naming and all the components for this wheel system. It has been decided that this wheel system will be called ARS (Aero Race System).
So, that means you will have the following rims:
- NXT30ARS
- NXT35ARS
- NXT40ARS
- NXT45ARS
- NXT50ARS
- NXT60ARS
The hubs are Nextie Rollingstar II 20-hole.
The spokes will be NXTCS09, which is a 4.5mm diameter wide spoke. The NXTCS09 weighs 3.3g each. There is also another spoke that was considered or developed that weighs 1.7g each but is only 2.64mm in width. I elected the wider, slightly heavier spoke as the wheelset is already so light. I am very heavy, and the deeper spoke made more sense aerodynamically speaking to me.
I am not sure when this information will be on the website but this is all the information you would need.
In theory, you could do the 60mm rims at 1200g with the lighter spoke!
This is a possibility yes!
I forgot to mention in my conversations, Nextie has certified the ARS with NXTCS09 for use in gravel if a user would like too. My gut would be this is āactualā gravel and not slight XC gravelā¦
Got your message, thank you! Iāll be in touch.
I saw Light Bicycle just released a new rim called the Airia. A number of different depths and widths but the Airia 52 looks the most intriguing (52 mm deep, 25/31.5mm IW/OW).
I played around a bit with builds and using that rim + CX-ray spokes + aluminum nipples + dt swiss 240 came out to 1241.28g and USD 1403.40. Seems crazy light for a wheel that deep with a āregularā hub and non-carbon spokes.
If you do internal nipples, youāre really getting extra speed for the depth.
After a 3 month wait I had these arrived today. I went with the 52mm deep rims + CX ray spokes + DT Swiss 240 hubs. I chose to do the solid rim bed so I (hopefully) donāt need to bother with rim tape. Only had time to unbox and weight them (1286 grams on my kitchen scale) so no thoughts yet
The Airia rims are superb. I have the 47/52 rims, carbon spokes and LB speed hubs, at 1103 grams
Stiff but not harsh, very happy with them so far. Plus the hum with the carbon rims and spokes sounds amazing at speed.
Iām a big fan of Light Bicycle as well. I think a couple of years ago 1.5KG was considered quite solid in terms of weight, and we could easily be in a year or two think 1.2KG is āheavyā.
This is the most rapidly changing improvement area, both weight and price are being driven down, while frames are kind of the same, despite all the hype. Prices arenāt being driven down with frames at all.
Wheels are where all the conversation should be.
Iāve been discussing a 50/50 built at Nextie with @teddygram and this one would be 1.06KG, with no rim tape needed, and (as I understand it) internal nipples. 23mm internal, 30mm external.
Basically lighter than any mainstream climbing wheel with true aero depth. The weight weenie / lighter rider in me would like to see 20 spokes per wheel, but that isnāt available yet.
More on the rim profile: NEXTIE - [Alpha 50] Supreme Edition All Road Bicycle Carbon Rim 50mm 335g (Advanced Single-Point)
I just ordered a reverse mullet set of Airias - similar sort of concept to the new Rapides. 52F/47R. Estimated weight pre build was like 1050g. Will update in like two months or so when they show up.
Iām a big fan of that, perhaps even more staggered like a 50 / 40 to optimize weight where you want it (acceleration on rear) and aero on the front edge.
Oh believe me I hemmed and hawed over what depth combo to ask them to make forā¦.way too long haha. Eventually just sent it because I was talking myself in circles.
Haha! I am the same, thinking of theoretical for .25w of 25g of gain.
no rim tape + internal nipples might be quite the challenge.. I have a road set without rimtape (no holes in the rimbed, except for the valve). That means that you need to feed your nipples with a magnet to the spoke holes AND, since there is no way to turn the nipple from the rimbed (no holes), you must turn the nipple with a regular spoke key on the outside. (so internal not possible)
Maybe Iām wrong, but I donāt see how
@nvalphen Youāre slightly misunderstandingāthe rim has internal molded nipple holes, not drilled ones. This lets the manufacturer optimize the rim layup for weight savings and strength, since the structure doesnāt need to be drilled through. The spoke nipple itself is still external and accessible from the outside of the rim.
If you ever do need to replace a nipple, yesāyouāll have to guide it into place using a magnet and a short metallic spoke āstub.ā It sounds trickier than it really is, but itās manageable, and in practice youāll hopefully never have to deal with it.
More technical details;
OK, internal nipples is not the same is āinternal molded nipple holesā .. but on the linked page, also that term is not used at all. They call the nipple hole inforcement: āadvanced single-point reinforcement technologyā
My understanding of āinternal nipplesā is like this:
(where the first 3 are internal, and the last regular/external, only the last one can be tensioned with an external tool (spoke key),for the first 3, you need to use a nipple driver from the rim bed side)
My vote for ā
