Adaptations at weird times, some decreasing workload

I have been running a gravel plan for a few months now and this has happened on more than a few occasions…

I am on a 4 ride/week plan, I complete a ride, go to ride analysis, check out all the data, don’t get any adaptations. Next day log in or open app just to click around or whatever, no adaptations. The following day (2 days after my last ride) open app for my scheduled workout, app suggests adaptations, and some of the adaptations are decreasing workload.

This happened yesterday, I ignored the adaptations and did my regular scheduled workout, which I marked as easy and got adaptations after the ride, which is when I would expect them to occur, not two days later. Why does the software seem to give adaptations at random times with no workouts or rides that would have triggered them?

Some of those adaptations were decreasing workload, which i don’t really feel like I need to do at this point. I can’t seem to only allow some adaptations so I cherry pick the ones I want by declining all, and then going in and changing the ones that I would have been ok with (I screenshot the adaptations so I can remember which ones to change). I know there is probably a lot that goes into the AI adaptation decisions and all that and don’t want to take away from the plan, but some of the adaptations seem unnecessary. Am I hurting my progress by not accepting the decreasing workload adaptations? I don’t feel like I need the decreased adaptations right now, so far my plan has been relatively easy, I have only had to mark a few workouts as hard, I just got a 7% FTP bump a week ago, so I am progressing. I have increased the training approach of my plan from balanced to demanding to try and increase my workload a bit but the AI seems to want to go the other direction.

I’m the same as you, I find it really hard to accept a adaptation to an easier workout.

In fact, in truth, I normally don’t!

I guess only TR can tell you why this is happening and what effect not accepting will have.

My guess, is you run the risk of having too much fatigue, which isn’t allowing your body to recover/make the adaptations it needs.

TR are going big on us needing to give our bodies the time required to get stronger.

Like all this stuff, if you are aware of how you are feeling and think you can manage it, then maybe stick with the harder workout, but it can be difficult to know how you will be feeling at the end of the block/plan

I am finding same thing & already adjusted RLGL all the way to most aggressive, still finding the same thing and getting adapted down any time I add on a few easy endurance miles/minutes to the scheduled work out. this is annoying and not good IMHO.

Hey y’all,

Nice catch!

TrainerRoad now looks beyond just Workout Levels, factoring in your fitness, recent training, and overall trends to pick the right workout for you that day. :chart_increasing:

When a workout looks different from what you might expect based on past recommendations, it’s reflecting a broader view of your current fitness and capabilities. This supports consistent, high-quality training, and that’s exactly what helps you get faster. :flexed_biceps:

These adaptations may be based on bigger, longer-term changes in your fitness, or the impact of recent activities you’ve completed, or many other things in between.

This goes for workouts with both higher and lower levels than you might expect. :bar_chart:

We’d suggest accepting the adaptations and continuing on with your training.

As always, though, feel free to reach out if you have other questions! :slightly_smiling_face:
