6 HOURS AT 5.0W/KG?! | Keegan Swenson World Champs Power File Analysis | Ask a Cycling Coach 549

Keegan did it! He won the 2025 UCI XCM World Championships and we dug into his power file with him, looking at each of the climbs and getting his insight into the tactics, bike setup, course and field dynamics and more for every pedal stroke (err… hiking step…).

Insane to look at what he can hold in terms of power up at elevation. If you adjust the numbers for sea level, it’s absolutely crazy what he can do for being a rider of his size.

Hope you enjoy this one with one of our longest running podcast guest hosts (+10 years now!).

If you have any questions for him, let us know and we can get the answers for ya.

The power numbers are completely bananas. They’d be incredible for the bike stage of an Iron Man. They are insane for a marathon mountain bike race.

@Jonathan

Just some quick feedback: Can you please make sure you give distances and such also in metric units? For much of the podcast you simply gave e. g. elevation differences in feet, which means nothing to the vast majority of the world.

If you are having trouble to remember that, perhaps a hack would be to always give the quantities in metric first so that you don’t forget?

Or at least add a conversion in-screen during post-production.

Syd and Macky have picked up on this and it does seem helpful, or at least more likely than the USA switching to metric any time soon.

While I’m sure there are instances where he didn’t, I feel like this one in particular he was constantly saying both and did a great job of getting metric included. For me it’s almost the opposite, I’d prefer we just use one than reference both every single time, just adds a lot of extra wording.

Nice interview Jon and way to go Keegan!

Sure, but I think it wouldn’t be realistic to insist on him using solely metric units throughout (since this is what the world - US and Nigeria runs on).

Did we listen to the same episode? I feel like every single number was communicated in metric and imperial

No, e. g. when discussing the climbs, I think most elevations and elevation differences were just given in feet.

Examples:

  • ~9:15: all elevations in feet
  • ~11:15: distance in miles
  • ~26:00: all elevations in feet

1 m = 3.281 ft, it’s not that hard.

Switching to metric ain’t that hard either

Personally I find it super distracting when they give multiple units at once. Just pick one and stick with it. Conversions are super easy if you don’t know one or the other.

Couldn’t agree more. Run with metric.

I think this clearly shows it’s important to say both, not just pick one, lol. I built it all out beforehand, but dropped the ball a few times during. It’s tough to keep all the numbers straight every time when you’re dealing with so many numbers!

Yes, and since the vast majority of people worldwide use metric, the choice is obvious. Like you said, “conversions are super easy”, but distracting

Huge congratulations Keegan…well deserved and thanks for sharing the data file and your experience….is there any footage for the full event at all ?

Great podcast, love this format of race review.

You know it’s good when the only thing people have to complain about is whether the stats are provided in multiple units of measure… TR makes an effort to include metric conversions more often than not, but when the host and guest are accustom to imperial units in the normal course of conversation, it’s going to slip in and it’s too disruptive (IMO) to pause to run the conversion constantly. I’m of the opinion that a podcast should pick one or the other based on their primary target market. And if there isn’t a strong majority of the audience in the US, go metric.

People like to think they can skip over the last thing on the list. Keegan did not. :rainbow:

“Surround yourself with people who support you doing your thing” reminds me…

I don’t really use social media much so probably late to the party on this one, but on the “cool down” after Keegan’s win at World’s Sofia was called his fiancée. They’ll probably never see this, but congrats!

say congrats under the cooldown video, I did and got a response. I’m sure they look there more often. Lucky guy!
