This week’s episode is a quick update on my sub-7 Leadville project, and I’m finally back above 300w!
I was pleased/surprised to see only a very slight tapering in improvement rate for my second month of training. It’s going to be really tough to get to 320w (the goal to make sub-7 a more certain outcome), but we’re marching along!
I thought our AIFTP was not our FTP though? So…..should we be comparing it to our old FTP values? I thought it was its own thing, which is why people were going nuts on the forum for the last two months. For instance, my “FTP” is higher than it has EVER been right now. But is that just the new system or am I actually stronger than ever? I would love for it to be simple and comparable to historic values I have used, but was under the impression that the system is simply using it as a value to pick workouts. Please simplify/explain this once and for all TR.
I don’t think @Jonathan is worried/stressed about it like a lot of forum posters. He is using the AiFTP number and just going with it. It’s obviously working for him and as he has said before, the new system has taken a lot of stress/brain space off by just following the plan and getting great workouts. My $0.02. More people should do the same.
That’s what I have been doing as well. But to say you got a breakthrough when it is a different number is the issue. I too have had a similar breakthrough….maybe….sorta? I don’t know. I’d love to say that my FTP is higher than ever, but I think it is just a different number measured in a different way so not sure I can do that with a straight face. But other than that issue, it is not a problem. I just follow the training and move on. Hopefully that makes sense. It is a small nitpick, but I’m happy with my training and progress regardless.
+1. My current AIFTP estimate (which I manually override) has my FTP 17 watts higher than what the old AIFTP estimated this same time last year. And my fitness/FTP is actually a bit lower this year. It doesn’t matter in the context of getting good workout prescriptions, just makes comparison to history challenging for athletes where the new coke and old coke aren’t the same. But there seem to be plenty of athletes where the old/new numbers are good comparison points.
All that said, there are plenty of other threads that have beaten this point to death, so I’ll just say congrats to Jon on the progress toward the Leadville goal. Haven’t listened to this latest pod yet, but will be following all of these closely. Sub 7 is a legit big time goal for anyone who doesn’t make their living racing bikes.
Don’t forget Jonathan has been using this system a lot longer than we have. So 300 is a breakthrough over some reasonable period of time, longer than just 2/3 months. And I think we are all way to focused on FTP versus getter fitter and faster. If Jonathan breaks 7 hours at Leadville, what the system says his FTP is doesn’t matter…breaking 7 hours does!
Not everyone’s AI FTP changed drastically with the new system. Mine didn’t change at all when I was accepted into the beta. So we don’t actually know that it’s a different number.
It isn’t about real or not and it’s not relevant whether the new FTP changed things for every person or only some people. The issue is akin to measuring your height with a new version of a ruler that has some similarity to a normal ruler. So some folks got shorter, some stayed about the same, and some got taller. But it is still measuring with a different ruler.
I think it’s fair for Jonathan to say it’s a breakthrough, wasn’t that your issue? As it appears for him he was the 80% that didn’t have a big change either way.
Fortunately for me, the AI FTP appears to be close to my FTP judging by my pacing in a couple of races. And my RPE for the TR workouts seems appropriate. Hopefully that all continues.
I know the new updates have caused issues for other users but hopefully TR can get those all ironed out for everybody.
In other news…. For me, it’s refreshing to hear Jon talking about body comp and weight loss as a key contributor to the performance gains he is shooting for. It seemed like weight loss has been a taboo subject at TR for a long time, glad he’s sharing the healthy approach he’s taking. It’s too important of a subject to ignore in the context of getting faster.
