2025 XC Bike & Equipment Thread

Hopefully Salsa will finally ditch the aluminum rear triangle.

Iā€™d be curious to see what the changes would be.

It just received a refresh last year to accept flight attendant.

They look much more like Pi Rope spokes (https://pirope.net/) than Berd Spokes.

But unlike Pi Rope they seem to have normal diameter nipple threads? Which would mean you could use any rim youā€™d like unlike for Pi Rope who need wider nipple holes and thus only specially made rims are able to be used (there are some from e.g. Beast Components or Duke).

And from the info available I was wondering if you could use any straight pull hub youā€™d like. As there are no infos on requirements for those give. But you say they need special hubs, too? A bummer.

How do you measure spoke tension, when you build up a wheel with such fiber spokes?

Pretty much the same, you need the appropriate deflection number though. Berd gives Kgf numbers and settings for the Park Tensiometer. Wheel Fanatyk has a conversion chart that includes Berd, but itā€™s the only ā€œFiberā€ spoke on the chart so someone would have to do the initial calculations / conversions for the different Tensiometers for any new fiber spoke like Nextie.

thank you. This answers my question.

I can ask the Nextie rep any questionā€™s you have. The feedback I have gotten so far was that they need to be used in conjunction with the Nextie hub but there was not any mention about the spoke hole diameter needing to be increased.

One of their athletes on Strava has posted a few photos riding on it, looks good IMO, reverting away from the crazy big tubes of the past it seems. I figured they would go flex stays, but appears not. I used to race a split pivot trek though, and can imagine it could work quite well with a not shitty DCRV or whatever it was shock. I did break the frame at the pivot though (due to a broken hanger).

If this is the correct geo, im into that as well: 2025 Salsa Cycles Spearfish Carbon Deluxe X0 TTYPE FA - Bike Insights

where are you located? Iā€™m hearing a much earlier launch for xtr/grx 1x electronic. Iā€™m hearing march april for availability with an earlier launch than that for product info and specifics.

If the geo charts are correct, itā€™s steep on the STA, and the medium is a pretty long reach.

What derailleur is that?

Looks like a lot of team transfers this season.
Ibis looks to be out of the XC world, Canyon picked up Jenny, Cannondale Factory seemed to let go of all their world champs to add young talent.

My enduro bike needs a new drivetrain. Iā€™m looking to hit the sweet spot of value + durability, I donā€™t care at all about weight on this bike. Currently have a mechanical eagle gx drivetrain, which im mostly fine with. Iā€™d like to stay with SRAM so I donā€™t need to change shifter.

I was thinking the optimum setup would be gx derailler and cassette with an x01 chain. Iā€™ve always been unimpressed with the gx derailler as it seems to have really bad chain slap, but OTOH itā€™s quite cheap. Anyone have any thoughts or advice?

My trail bike is GX and has been as good as any of my higher end group sets. If you donā€™t care about weight definitely is best bang for the buck!

Edit: I agree about the chain wear. XO1 is the way to go there.

In my experience then X01 cassette is both significantly lighter and significantly more durable than GX to the point that itā€™s worth the extra cost.

I concurā€¦. I just snapped a tooth off a GX cassette and have never had an issue with the higher end components.

I definitely think x01 is a sweet spot. That said, the GX derailleur is barely heavier than the X01 derailleur and shares the same electronic underpinnings (and has a better / more secure battery cage design) ā€“ GX is definitely the bang for buck item on the rear D and even the shifter. The cassette and cranks warrant a higher trim like x01 or xx1.

I am unimpressed with Sram Eagle AXS. I havenā€™t tried the Transmission stuff, but the first gen had poor chain retention and the derailleur itself flopped around a lot. Iā€™m back on Shimano XT mechanical shifty bits and happy as a clam.

If you can get a new X01 shifter and der on sale you will notice an improvement. better shifting performance than GX. X01 chain will be more durable so will the X01 cassette because they use different (harder) materials, but if you want to keep costs low then go GX cassette with X01 chain. Iā€™d keep the gx cranks for sure.
