Really great and interesting points! Thankyou
@Aeroiseverything Interesting. Where can I find the information “Specialized now officially clears the Crux for SRAM 2x 46/33, 48/35, 50/37”
The information on the website says something else:
https://support.specialized.com/crux/en/components-compatibility/drivetrain-brakes
This is exactly what I was curious about. Considering selling Boone for the Crux but worried it would lack in the CX racing. Glad to hear it’s working out for you. Might be doing the same.
Apparently they changed that again.
SRAM standard width works, but the battery of the front derailleur limits tire width.
As reported before 44mm tires (actual width) work well.
Anyone seen the ice blue / tarmac black rival 1x11 in the wild? Got one on order… Merely 5060 USD (converted) for a rival 1x11 bike with 150usd wheels
Read a post yesterday on reddit claiming that the new crux cracks easy at the chainstays… Hope not.
I saw that on Reddit too. Has anyone else here heard of that? Of course any frame can be broken by a bad crash or similar but their claim that “there hasn’t been a single North American [pro] rider that hasn’t cracked a frame somehow” is concerning.
I was also a little unsure about the Crux for CX when they first announced the change to gravel racer, but after seeing plenty of pros racing World Cups on the new Crux, it seems plenty nimble for them! I’ll eventually sell my Crockett and the Crux is high on my list of replacement options.
Sorry to dig up such an old thread, but do you have any details you could elaborate on re: the Norcross? It is definitely a long (wheelbase and front center) and slack bike, much more so than a crux or even some gravel bikes.
Just curious to hear if you have anything to add on this. - thanks
I don’t, I haven’t ridden either, sorry. Hopefully someone who has will chime in
@outdoorbros I’m trying to do exactly this! Did you run wide cranks or regular? Mind running through your specs and how you’re liking it, if you’ve kept it?
Thanks!
Hey,
In the event you do t get a response, he has a great Instagram page with most of this info on.
Gg
I personally know 2 guys riding the crux in uci cx. Both are sponsored by Big S, both have said it ain’t what it used to be and if they weren’t obligated to ride it, they’d be on something else.
I was between the crux and boone this year and think I made the right call with the boone!
Depends on what you want to do. The Force Wide cranks only make sense for a full wide set (wide FD, 43/30 rings) in my experience.
The standard width Red works perfectly with 1x rings.
Thank you!
If the Boone could take 38mm tires I would buy one. I’ve never really understood why the Crockett can take 38mm, but the Boone can’t.
The current, 3rd gen Boone does have a 38c tire size as max, listed right in the bike specs page.
I know the same was spec’d for my 1st gen Boone, but not sure on the 2nd gen.
I will say that a 38c in my 1st gen looks snug at the chainstays, but super fine at the seatstays and fork. If you deal with mud on a regular basis, the rear is more like a 35c clearance, but that depends on several other factors.
The Boone takes 38c tires - per Trek, so you can easily put a 40c+ on it. My old Crockett could only do 35c rear/38c front.
It’s basically a H2 fit Domane without the door.
I was just looking at the Domane thinking it was too short tall and the Checkpoint was too long, then I saw the boone was basically the same fit as my prior gen Checkpoint.
Yup I have some 38s I use for messing around on the local singletrack. Not talking Lauf Siegla levels of clearance, but plenty of room to spare!
I also just found that online. A couple years ago I spoke to a guy at a race who had a 2020 Boone and he told me the rear could only take 35mm.
Good to know that it will also take 38s per Trek. Same as my Crockett I guess.
Hmmm…. my birthday is coming up……
- He may have been talking about personal preference.
Per this review, they also list 38c for the 2nd gen. I can’t find the official Trek data in the archives, but the 38c seems consistent across all 3 gens.
ETA: found this frameset & complete data that lists 33c max, which just seems wrong to me, but still looking:
