2022 Specialized Crux info?

They say a 33mm max to allow mud clearance for CX. But if you don’t care about that, i.e. on gravel, you can run larger tires. But the Boone still sucks on that front. Most say 38mm is the widest they can get on there. I have a Crockett (the Boone’s alloy twin), and for some reason it has slightly wider clearance. I run 38mm easily and I have heard it will take 40mm.

38 would be the max for sure. I’ve got wide rims (23mm internal) so tires sit pretty wide for me. 33s usually measure 35-36mm and there is not much space left.

Is the podium picture available?

This is the one I’ve seen. Personally, I dig the frankenbike aesthetic. I’m hoping the other color ways will leak before October 8th.

Looks like the Aethos frameset. Thank you.

From what I’ve read, the whole design for the new CruX is basically an off-road Aethos. Superlight frame, normal 27.2 seat post, massive tire clearance (47mm). And the tube shapes are going to be very similar to the Aethos.

Now that I think about it. If this is going to be an off-road Aethos, is there any benefit from buying the Aethos? It’ll be interesting to see the real world weights, because if they’re close to what they claim, you could build up a super light road bike (<6.8kg or even lighter), but have the capability to throw on wide tires and go off-road. What would be the benefit from buying the Aethos, just get the CruX. If you don’t race, this could really be a do-it-all bike for people who don’t care about aero optimization or want an integrated cockpit.

Kind of funny how they describe the new 2022 CruX vs the current model:

CruX is Unapologetically Cyclocross

When we set out to design a new ‘cross rig, we didn’t just want to make another “adventure” bike with added tire clearance. No way. We wanted to create a dedicated, purebred racing steed that was fast, confident, lightweight, and with a ride like no other ‘cross bike out there. And with multiple World Championships already attributed to its name, the new CruX is ready to take its storied legacy to new heights.

All about those sales.

I agree with your take, and it’s just more versatile than the Aethos. I wanted to love the Aethos, it’s crazy light- but maxing out at 32s tires is just limiting for the type of riding that I do.

On my test ride I kept thinking, this would be my perfect bike if I could run Pathfinder Pros (38s) in it. I was working with my local shop, looking at Diverges and Revolts and then I got clued in on the Crux as an “Aethos-like gravel bike”. It sounded perfect to me and there will actually be inventory to buy, so I’m hoping it all works out.

2022 Specialized Crux shifts from CX to an ultralight gravel speedster - CyclingTips - review is up with lots more info.

With the shift of some gravel models swinging to the Long/Low/Slack side of gravel, I think this is one of the more “old school” road bike for dirt bikes that I would actually like riding most days.

There are some positive features of my newer Warbird, but it sure lacks the feel and fun that I had with my old Boone. This new Crux seems much closer to that older feel that I like. Very interested in these new models.

This looks like a great bike…but those lows hahaha

Ah, I was afraid, based on James’s tweet the other day, that the review would be this positive. Really didn’t want to want this bike :joy:

Yeah, easy to rip on pricing to some degree, but the Comp and Expert seem decent for the price and offering ($6000 AXS Rival, $4200 mech Rival).

They look amazing in the striped colorways as well.

The lack of red gravel bikes is starting to become a burden. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

These sound awaesome…BB is still a tad higher than I personally would prefer, but certainly reasonable at 72 (for most sizes). Overall description sounds exactly what I want from a gravel bike…and had I not bought an Aspero this summer, this would be high on my list of options.

But again, the lack of a red bike would probably prevent any purchase of a Crux.

I bought my Pro version 2 years ago for less than $5k :grimacing:

Mech Rival is comparable to Shimano 105, right? I know prices trend up and what not, but I bought a 105 level Canyon Endurace in 2019 for $2k (they’re now $2600).

Excuse me while I go yell at the whippersnappers out on my lawn and longing for a time when gas was less than $1/gal

$4200 for a bike with mech rival. Yeah, no.

I test rode an Expert level (dark green) today and it’s definitely a fun/fast/light bike.

I have the striped white/clay/gray Expert on order.

I was impressed with the XPLR Rival AXS setup, just hoping my bike comes in before Christmas.

(I don’t know why the pic is coming in upside down)

It is not aero in the slightest. Complete betrayal of your screen name.

Glad I could assist in your time of need. :stuck_out_tongue:
