2020 XC Bike Thread

Personal issue but looking for advice/experience:

Bike was stolen in June, ordered a Santa Cruz Blur TR from LBS in mid-July and was told it would be 3-4 weeks. Was just updated that the earliest they could take delivery on the bike is now late December-early Jan. I am super sad and considering just cancelling my order for a few reasons including the fact that Mar-June is typically unrideable where I live and by the time I could finally ride next year there may be a fully redesigned Blur. Reasons I don’t want to cancel are that it feels like giving up on MTB for a full year and I miss it, and also feel bad for my LBS.

Anyone been in a similar situation? What would you do? And is anyone actually shipping bike right now?

If a bike isn’t currently in stock at the store, you aren’t going to see it until winter.

Unless you absolutely want a Blur, I would cancel.

It’s hit or miss. I just bought a Trek road bike and Trek had a bunch of stock on the model/size I was looking for. I ordered it last Thursday, arrived at the shop on Wednesday, picked it up yesterday. The basic and lower end bikes are really hard to find right now, but some of the more expensive models are available and deals can still be had. I’ve got a bunch of teammates who have bought new bikes in the last couple months, with no availability issues. Our shop is definitely moving a bunch of bikes right now. Supply can be an issue, but it seems like the bigger issue is they can’t build them as fast as people are buying them.

If you go to Trek’s website, you can actually see which bikes/sizes are available in their warehouse. No problem if you want to buy a 7k super caliber. Good luck buying a 1-2k bike.

Sorry to hear about the bike. What country are you in and what size do you ride? I would be inclined to go a different route and go to another brand but I like to ride more than I care about the bike that I am on when I am riding but that’s my preference.

In the USA. I have given quick looks at other similar bikes like Epic EVO and Top Fuel but not having any luck in my size (M). I will probably cancel, do more research on comparable bikes, and keep my eyes open for stock in other brand/models - otherwise likely wait til next summer

Do you have a decent used market locally? At least here (Denver metro), the used market is pretty active at the moment. You often have to be quick to jump on something you want because things that are priced fairly are moving quickly (because inventory on new bikes is so low at many shops), but I’ve definitely seen some quality deals popping up on our local buy/sell groups. Could be an option. We have a pretty big bike theft problem around here, so I’ve seen a lot of people in your shoes this summer. It stinks.

All our shops are still stocked when it comes to carbon bikes. Just the entry level stuff is gone.

Some updates to the Canyon Lux for the 2021 model. Little tweaks, added a 110mm fork to some models and a new rear suspension design

it’s not just the pain of the beatup, it also can be slower.

like this morning I did ride before work on some local trails and sampled a new trail just built. It’s a blue but a “spicy blue”–roughly 2k feet of descent over two miles, it’s rough and rooty and technical and definitely not a flow trail. a few times i had to slow down not because of the technical challenge of cleaning a section but rather because my body was tired from absorbing all the hits. Guess i need to add burpees to my routine!

Could you ride it on a hardtail? Sure, but regardless how good you are, you’ll be a lot slower and waaaaaay more tired at the bottom.

Best part of that article i think is this picture:

Way too little… Too late…

A redesign in 2021 should at least net you a 69 ha

I agree…was sort of shocked to see the HA wasnt 68.something.

If you are M in Santa Cruz, you may be M/L in Top Fuel. I am at 175 cm tall (short)

Canyon is in general fairly slow and conservative to update. Look how long it took with the aero road. The Exceed is fairly modern for a hardtail, but the Lux looks dated now.

Silly question maybe as I’ve never ridden a dually properly.

I see the new procaliber as hard to go past value for money. How would the rear compliance compare to say an Epic or does the brain react quickly enough to give compliance over little bumps/trail buzz?

For me it’s looking like a Full Carbon entry level procaliber vs high-ish level Alloy Anthem. Kinda wondering why I’d be better off with an anthem (or similar)

I’m only doing up to 1/2 marathons and not competitively. For most of the riding I do a hardtail is perfectly fine - just when the distance goes up the constant jarring gets to my back pretty badly.

Great value for the price still.

I have almost 6,000 miles on my iPhone 7+ this year alone in a ziplock bag no issues. This is my 4th season with this phone and baggy combo. I’m in Texas so plenty of heat and humidity but zero issues.

And the award for today’s random post goes to…

The big difference between how the isospeed on the procaliber works vs a FS is that the isospeed only adds compliance between the bike and the saddle. So if you ride over bumps and you are standing off the saddle then it would feel like any other hardtail. However, FS puts it’s compliance between the rear wheel and the rear of the bike so you get that smoother ride even if you are out of the saddle.
