Lol… that’s awesome! Love Brown County - great trails for a fast XC bike.
Looks like I am joining the Supercaliber club.
Managed to pick up a 2021 9.8 GX at 2020 pricing - and a little extra loyalty discount. Too good a price to miss - as the lower price pretty much pays for the power meter.
The GX cranks are not easy to put power meter on - I think a stages might work - or alternatively I think power2max could work. I have decided to put a Rotor inPower on instead - dealer credits me for my GX cranks.
Next is dropper. I ride a M/L frame - which has a seat tube length of 445mm. My saddle height is 740mm - which means height to middle of the rails is 255mm.
I don’t think the Supercaliber has any insertion issues - @Kuttermax you have a dropper on yours, is that correct?
So my worry is probably more about ensuring I have enough post in the seat tube - typically most droppers require 100mm.
Based on this I recon a 150mm dropper is about right. Could probably use a 125mm - but it may be tight on insertion?
Any thoughts / comments would be helpful?
Currently looking at the Devine, the 2021 Fox the KS Lev Integra (had it on my Top Fuel). Any other recommendations?
Also @Kuttermax - I know you have the AXS so maybe the lever is different - but could you post a photo of your cockpit with dropper and lock out levers - trying to find the best solution. It is probably a over the bar type lever like Wolftooth or something.
As far as droppers go I had a Bontrager Drop Line on my last 2 bikes and thought it was fine. Now I got the AXS dropper and realize just how slow the mechanical droppers were, the difference is really huge
Nice try, trying to get me to spend £600
It is expensive, no question. But if you have a few bikes it’s quite easy to swap the thing around since there’s no cables (assuming your seatpost diameters are compatible)
I’m still undecided, new Scalpel versus Supercaliber.
With that in mind, I had this on the list for the Supercaliber: https://r2-bike.com/SRAM-XX1-Eagle-DUB-SL-Crank-incl-Quarq-DUB-AXS-Power-Meter-Spider (or a Stages as you said)
yes, I think there are four options
The XX1 new crank set
Rotor inPower (which is what I am going for)
Stages L pedal arm
Power2Max - where the meter is direct mount and you then mount a chain ring to the powermeter
The first two require new cranks, the latter two you can use the GX cranks.
Dont forget the Sigeyi power meter. I used one on my truvativ descendant 7k eagle dub crankset (which come stock on the 9.8 Trek Topfuel). They use the same 3 bolt style as GX. I recently picked up a X01 crankset and transferred it over to the X01s. Crazy Cheap power meter for the price. You can find the thread if you search here on TR forum.
Been doing some research tonight, and I am changing my mind as to power meter. I was originally going with the Rotor option - but I think I am going to pick up a Power2Max instead. Seems to get very good reviews - can install on the GX cranks - all I need is a new four bolt chainring.
Will have a look at Sigeyl as well. To be honest, have never heard of them.
I had my SC configured with an AXS dropper through Project One. I’ve been really happy with it and have had zero issues.
I will snap a picture of my cockpit and post later this evening.
Here are a couple of shots. It’s a bit difficult to tell the angles on the photo’s. I am able to easily move my thumb from the dropper remote to the lockout. The lever doesn’t go straight down, which is how the photo looks, but rather it is at an angle and moves towards the dropper button when engaged. The lockout is pretty stiff and requires a firm press to engage. For me, the set up works fine, but I tend to only use the lockout on fire road type climbs and tend to leave the suspension open on the trail.
Many thanks. I was interested to see how you fit the AXS lever together with the lockout levers, given the AXS lever is fairly chunky. It is hard to see on the photo, but it looks like you have enough room for both.
How do you find the interaction and space with having both the AXS remote and the lockout there?
One benefit of a cable dropper is that it can use an over the bar type remote like Wolftooth
How the shop had originally set up my cockpit was much different and I had to immediately change things. I have XTR brakes, so right now I don’t have anything on the same mounts (ie. not using any matchmakers).
The shop had put the dropper inboard of the lockout, and this was not good for me at all. It was very awkward to reach the dropper remote. Moving the dropper outboard and next to the grip solved this immediately and I was still able to rotate the lockout remote into a good position. As mentioned, the lockout remote needs some force to activate. I’ve never had a lockout remote that locked both front and rear before, only one or the other. This lockout locks both front and rear, so maybe that is why it requires a bit more force. For me the set up works, but if someone were locking and unlocking really frequently, I could see where it might cause some hand fatigue, especially with smaller hands.
I don’t know if you have seen Kate Courtney’s setup for her AXS dropper, but she has a Blip button installed on her handgrip and can use her index finger to drop it. Pretty cool idea and then would give complete freedom in terms of where you put the lockout remote.
Yeah I saw that. I also saw Neff is using the TwistLoc for her lockout.
This is the setup I´m going for. I placed an order with project one for the 9.8 and already got the XX1 quarq ready.
I´ve got the rotor inpower on my current MTB but it´s just not working for me… lower power numbers (20+ watts less) then my road bike and trainer (Quarq + Wahoo) and it’s always making noise, doesn’t matter how much grease I add…
I don’t know the delivery time yet but I’m afraid it’s going to take a while
My deed is done too.
9.8 as well. Bought it in stock colour - as I could get it with 10% of list.
Rotor inpower LOL. I have had good experience in the past and it is fair amount cheaper than XX1 Quarq. That said Quarq is great - have it on my road bike. I was considering the Power2max too, but liked the idea of getting everything from same dealer.
Based on comments on here i succumbed and went with a Reverb AXS (basically spend the above saving)
Decided to get the RS TwistLoc to run same setup as the Trek race team.
XT race pedals - still the best pedal in the world I think - have them on my gravel bike too.
Should get it within a month time.
You will not regret the dropper! 9.8 comes with GX mech right? The new mech is supposedly better than the old GX, though I don’t care for having even larger granny gear capability myself
Will be interested to hear your feedback on it.
Congrats on the new build. You are going to have a blast!
Yeah it is GX.
To be honest I had the old GX on my 2018 Top Fuel and I never had any issues with it.
It is a big granny - and it comes with 32T chain ring. So deffo no issues climbing walls.
