Those that are doing 2 training rides per week and 1 hard group ride, how do you structure your training? do you just ignore the third training ride in a plan or use TrainNow?
Hard to know without knowing your training history or what volume fits in your 3 rides…not a lot of riding to do any kind of proper structure though…I would just enjoy the rest of my riding unstructured, go target some KOMs or tie in some endurance/sweet spot as your area allows.
I’ve done this in the past. I was able to fake it for a while on as much sweet spot as possible for the 2 sessions as long as I committed to really going for it on the group ride. I made that my intensity for the week, and definitely participated in the sprint(s).
I say faked it because I couldn’t hang if a higher FTP, high mileage diesel pushed the pace for long enough, especially in the heat.
Sorry, I know that’s not detailed. Ultimately, I didn’t love it because I always felt like I was leaving potential on the table and to be honest, it made me more jealous of the riders who could drop me because they had 10+ hrs of ride time per week, especially when I knew I could beat them if I also had 10+ hrs. But, it is what it is if that’s the available time you have. That feeling was on me, I should have been happier for them and for my ability to at least hang with them. I just couldn’t punish them outside a sprint and I really wanted to!
I’ve set my plan up following one of the Masters plans. The 2 high effort workouts I do in the week and then I put the longer endurance ride at the weekend and either do that or do the club ride.
Having the plan saves me having to think and therefore reduces the likelihood of me skipping days when I’m busy unlike the TrainNow option which I tried last year.
When I was riding only 3 times a week, I could handle a lot of intensity because of all the rest days but I wasn’t actually that fit.
