Also, no power meter on any bikes. Just an old bike on a smart trainer for TR.
My “group rides” have consisted of race pre-rides with groups (not sprinting day before race day), and… I think that’s it? lol.
My local rides are all 4-7 hr mountainous gravel/mtb rides with one buddy. Sometimes we push some little sprints up hills towards the end but our rides are hard enough, we aren’t trying to hit all out PR’s.
That being said - I seriously dream of sprinting for a result at the end of a race. My last big gravel race ended in a super long gravel/double track/single track. I was on a MTB and nearly everyone else was on gravel. I passed a lot of people strategically towards the end, it was a ton of fun.
My favorite one to pass was the kid who was cramping up walking earlier and I gave him lmy huge homemade pickle juice shot. 20 mins after helping him out he flew past me on the last big climb, so I was glad to pass him on the final descent ![]()
Most group rides from my LBS team had set intermediate sprints. It was always fun because the strongest guys pulling at the front would try to set each other up and then sprint for the sign to see who could take the KOM that week, then we would all regroup and laugh at each other at the coffee shop down the road. Was good for camaraderie, and also helped the team learn who might be the best sprinters for the weekly crits.

Oh, I sprint with them. I just don’t have a power meter on my bike, so I have no idea what numbers I hit. I’ll get some power pedals eventually, but I really don’t see a need at the moment.
@Jonathan As a heavier cyclist, I often hear that I should be able to push higher absolute watts and that my W/kg should eventually match that of lighter riders because I have more muscle mass. Honestly, I don’t think it’s that simple.
I believe there’s a natural FTP ceiling for the average person, regardless of their weight. Unless someone is genetically gifted, simply having more muscle mass doesn’t automatically mean they can push significantly more watts than a smaller rider. On top of that, having broader shoulders means my frontal area is larger. This forces me to push harder just to maintain the same speed as smaller cyclists, so I feel penalized even on the flats.
With that in mind, would it be possible to run an analysis showing the average FTP broken down by rider weight and training volume?
I don’t race & I haven’t done a spirited group ride with sprints for years. The two times in recent memory that I hit 1000w were when I was playing in traffic. It’s surprising what you can do when lizard brain takes over.
If I ever have to sprint, its a bad sign. It means I didnt go hard enough on the sustained climbs to drop the group. But let’s be real, at 60kg, I am outsprinting absolutely NO ONE ![]()
