Zone 2 - Only 2 hours a day max

What are you training for? What type of event? When?

Nothing in particular. I just want to get a little faster (well, much faster).

Overall goals could be:
Competitive at outdoor track league (May)
3.5 w/kg
Keep up with friends on their group ride
Kilo & 3k IP at masters track (June).

Quite broad and general hence the approach of just improving aerobic abilities.

I don’t want to pigeonhole myself which is what was starting to happen when I only did sprint training.

Track riding, the typical endurance needs of all other cycling disciplines hardly rate at all. This link might be helpful:

Thanks, I’ve read it.

I understand your point.

I did read about an old study that looked at a German TP team and found a large volume of their training was on the road.
Hayter, bigham, tanfield, all roadies with large volume endurance back grounds. All very good track riders too.
I agree sprinting is different, I’ve been training like a track sprinter for the past 6 months, but in the IP, you are still largely aerobic. Even the kilo for my level is at least 50/50.

Also, it’s my intention to not focus too much in one area to the detriment of others and be reasonable in both aerobic and anaerobic systems. Right now I’m all anaerobic.

I re read the article just in case I missed something.

Be careful of that article.
It’s a bit all over the place because it crosses track disciplines when discussing needs. Track sprinting is certainly specialised, but the comments on pursuiters doing 4k efforts points towards speciality phases. That being said even Pervis, was out on the road 3/4 times a week and Jamie staff took his sprints on the road a few times a week.

Those TT names I mentioned above put huge volumes on the road before prepping for track season.

Didn’t ganna, hayter, bigham compete at a high level on the road? Didn’t bigham get to the track worlds bronze final and take part in the road worlds ITT and hold the hour record?

I expected better from a UCI article. That just causes confusion.

A lot a road cyclist begun on the track. You can often spot them as they have an almost catlike arched back when down on the drops.
I’d suggest that your 90-120min Z2 rides are likely to long enough duration. Track and also Criterium riders need to do lots of events to master the skills, psychology and tactics. Sprinting isn’t just strength and power it is turning on the cadence to very high levels, while maneuvering. I wouldn’t get hung up of the overall quantity of endurance. Treat your Group ride as one, ie, draft at the back.

Good to hear as I can’t do more than 120 mins anyway lol.

I have been on track and full accredited at derby, which is where I realised that it would be nice to have at least some aerobic ability so I’m not dead in a simple pace line haha.

I’d be happy riding 120 at a decent clip. When I say endurance I simply mean aerobic power and capacity. Right now it’s extremely poor.

I understand the skills components and those will come with work but from a pure physiological training perspective, I feel I need more aerobic work to support the variety of cycling disciplines I am interested in

What I was trying to get from asking the question is, once I can ride z2 for 120 mins comfortably, what next as I don’t have time to add more time.

I think I have a good idea how to progress thanks to many responses here.
