XC Race Tire Thread

It should be noted that the BRR results that lead to my 15w difference assumption were also with the same tire pressure (25psi)

I unfortunately didn’t record it, but the top speed was about 35km/h. Acceleration and stop were very gentle

Yes, all the test runs were performed within a 40min window from 15:00 to 15:40, consistent air temperature, wind pretty low and consistent (to the degree one can ensure while working outside).

I was also not expecting these results, and I’m trying to be as precise as possible in the protocol description to see if someone can figure out a root cause

Wind, temperature, and atmospheric conditions definitely need to be accounted for. A-B-A testing is good to do to indicate potential shifts. I have not done road testing where I could tease out a difference, but on gravel I find a substantial difference from schwalbes to aspens

Interesting, how did you test them on gravel ?

find a section of gravel, pick a start and finish spot. ride at the same power? voila

Well done!
As a premium BRR user, do you know how they account for tread pattern?

I get that the relatively smooth drum is great at determining which tire has the lowest hysteric losses, but does it properly take into account knob height, tread pattern etc. when the tire rolls over rough asphalt in the real world?

What difference did you find between the Racing Ray/Ralph and the Aspens ?

Find a long low grade straight roll down, preferably sheltered from the wind. If all the times aren’t within a half to quarter second, it’s probably to variable to get much. It doesn’t give me a precise magnitude, but it gives a good indication of what is faster, and if it is consistently faster, it’s likely not just a fluke.

How about tire wear? Were these new, slightly used or fairly used?

Both sets were new

Wolfpack Speed in 2.25“. Claimed weight is 590g.

How about sealant volume or different tubes? That has tripped me up in the past.

100ml of Stans sealant in every tire

Vittoria Peyote test results just released at BRR, looking very good

Oh snap might have found my next tire. Only slightly more rolling resistance than the mythic race king, but it’s a 2.4 and has a better looking tread. Also has the highest grip raring they’ve tested (of course no idea how that translates to real life). I wonder what the mezcal is like, I’m guessing that test is coming soon.

That Peyote on the rear new Mezcal on the front may be a mean combo, I of course just mounted up and have only 1 ride in on a fresh set of Ray/Ralph 2.35s but maybe mid next year by then though maybe the new Conti Xc tires will be out.

I just wiped out on loose over hard on a 2.35 Ray / Ralph this week, so all of a sudden has me not liking those for that terrain. Even my 2.2 Race Kings have been better. But, they’re pretty new and have been fine on my home trails. And, have a set of Kenda Rush and bunch of Race Kings, so probably don’t “need” any tires for a while unless I decide to sell a bunch over the winter.

With that said - New Month of BRR Voting Live, Kenda Booster is still my vote. I think the Schwalbe Rick will get voted up without our help.

I want to see the Rick XC tested(although I’ve been checking the website to order them regardless of test results). I imagined the Peyote would do well, so that wasn’t a huge surprise, but the Rick looks to be the closest competition to the Race King that we’ve seen as far as a true “all-rounder”, with the added benefit of larger volume. I was somewhat expecting Conti to release their new 2.4" offering with the Olympics, but still nothing…

I find this odd, as I have found Ray/burt to be significantly more forgiving and predicable than the race king. This is in the Colorado Rockies, so loose over hard is not hard to find.
