XC Race Tire Thread

I’ve read some negative customer ratings, but I didn’t experience any flaws with the Rush TR 2.2, Rush TR 2.4 and neither with my new Rush SCT 2.4 that I have ran.

Why are you guys so interested in the trail casing on an XC race thread? Wouldn’t you want the TR tested?

Hannah Otto raced Leadville on the 2.2 SCT, so I think being interested in the heavier casing is valid. At <700g for the 2.4 SCT, I wouldn’t call it a trail tire.

Leadville is basically a gravel race though, so loads of people run tough casings for it because once you get dropped (from a puncture) your race is out.

Different from XCO where you can pit?

And not everyone in an XC race thread races XCO. Some of us are focused primarily on XCM-style races (like Leadville, which is less like a gravel race than people like to claim - notice how the winners aren’t on gravel bikes) and relying on being able to pit isn’t reasonable.

I love what you’re doing - it’s exactly what we need.
I’m just looking for an overall summary in an easy to reference location…

They run tough casings because a pinch flat is a very real risk. Ask me how I know

Hello @BS605 !

I’m racing the Cape Epic starting this week-end and I’m really struggling in my Maxxis tire choice to put on my DT Swiss XRC1200 Spline in 30mm inner. It’s super hot and dry out here again and therefore dusty/loose rocks everywhere.

So far I’ve been riding on my Ikon 2.35 (Rear) and Ardent Race 2.35 (Front) but had planned to put 2 Rekon Race 2.4 WT for the day before the prologue but I’m know second guessing myself…

You seem to have a good understanding/experience with both tires. Why not putting a Rekon Race 2.4WT in front instead of normal Rekon? Would you say that the Ardent Race 2.35 is grippier than the Rekon Race 2.4WT ?

Thanks a million !

FYI @Harrisoncj13 you seem to be in the know as well  I’d value your intake big time

I’ll let you know what I think of the 2.4 Maxxspeed Rekon Race after my ride today. It will be my maiden voyage on those tires on my favorite trail. I’m coming off 2.35 Fast Trak Control front with 2.4 Aspen (replaced a punctured 2.35 Renegade) rear. I ride an Epic hardtail with i29 rims so I like extra cushioning the 2.4 tires provide.

Are you sponsored by Maxxis?

Cape Epic is an amazing race and well done for qualifying. It isn’t that technical though, you might find you have a better time day-in and out on a brand with similar grip but much better rolling performance - that doesn’t just mean “put race kings on” (although that is what I would run), but any of the Schwalbe options are good?

Hello!

I have been running the rekon race 2.4 as a front tire basically since i made that last post and love it. I run an Aspen 2.4 in the rear.

I think it has more grip and predictability than an ardent race. I never liked the standard rekon 2.4 because the casing didn’t have as much volume and it didn’t seem to have much more grip on loose over hard.

The key to these high volume tires is running the proper lower pressure. I’m usually around 20 psi front and 24 rear. I do use tubilito inserts as well.

I think rekon race 2.4 wpuld be a perfect choice but any of the other choices you listed wpuld be fine too, dont overthink it!

Good luck on the Cape Epic, enjoy it!

And Gwendalyn Gibson won the 2022 XCC World Cup in Snowshoe on the Rush SCT.

The tr casing feels like a road bike tire….its really thin. I have 2 boosters with tr and one with sct. The tr tires survived a season of marathon type xc in Florida but I don’t think they’re make it thru a whole ride in any kind of western rocky conditions. Sct feels a lot like super ground and seems to roll pretty well too.

Maybe someday we’ll get an sct vs tr comparison along with super race vs super ground. I hope so!

Here are my thoughts on the Rekon Race 2.4 Maxxspeed after my first training session. It corners (grips) better than the 2.35 Fast Trak I was using on the front but it is a heavier tire. I was riding with a friend with similar capabilities who had a 2.3 Cross King on the front and I could corner as fast as he was. I’m sure the extra weight of the tires affects your spin up speed out of slow turns. But they roll well after you get them up to speed and I set my two fastest laps this year on a 5 mile per lap loop by about 15 seconds. I still need to play around with the air pressure. I might have been running the pressure a little higher than necessary just to make sure the tires were seated properly…better safe than sorry. No regrets in my purchase decision.

I have had the exact opposite experience with Rekon Race and Fast Trak. When I had Rekon Race on the front, I felt like I was sliding out in corners so often. I have run Fast Trak on the front for over a year now and I feel like it has endless grip.

Take all this with a grain of salt though because I believe I’m a slightly better technical rider now than when I ran the RR.

Got a few things to try to replace my rekon/rekon race combo. Question is where do I start?

Scorpion xc-rc xc-m, mezcal, barzo, ray, ralph, burst and a couple of gravel combos for the summer as well! :sunglasses:

Nice! My summer supply of tires looks the similar in qty and brands for gravel and mtb plus tire liners for the mtb! Hopefully you have your sealant in good supply too!

How’s it looking?
Thinking about signing up and voting, but I’ll probably pester y’all for input on tire setup for a few races this summer :v:

The Kenda is currently in a winning position and has extended it’s lead over the next closest by 4 with 9 days to go…
