I have the same tyres. My weights were 727g and 712g so quite inconsistent weights
Interesting discussion about Maxxis tyres.
Sounds like the Severe and updated Aspen are still some ways off.
Still waiting (not so patently) for my Wolfpack Tyres to arrive. Trails are still super wet so it’s not like I’m missing out yet on any MTB riding yet.
Just recieved my Wolfpack Tyres.
Super impressed with the feel and weights. Haven’t installed them yet but will soon. I need to make a call before my A-Race whether to go for the Cross front or Race. The Cross weighing marginally less is interesting and removes one of the normal sacrifices of a more confident front tyre.
I need to see how the Race and Cross effect rolling resistance and cornering confidence on the front.
Cross - 29 X 2.4 - 719g
Race - 29 x2.4 - 728g
Speed - 29x 2.4 - 669g
I tried to get hold of a couple of Speeds in 2.4 for a dry spell we had in the UK but couldn’t find any stock. I stuck the Reckon race that came with the bike back on and it’s rained ever since. Will be going back to the Cross/Race setup in the next few weeks for my upcoming races
Hi Guys
Looking for a winter training tyre for my 100mm hardtail, max clearance 2.35. Currently my favorite combo is forekaster + rekon.
The tyres will go in my winter wheelset. 21int width and will be mostly for workouts during the weekday or really bad weather. I do workouts on-road and then generally descend down on natural trails (slippy, rooty, rutty). Mostly more enduro than typical XC.
Thinking 2x forekaster 2.2 or nobby nic front and racing ray back.
Prioritizing grip/durability and cheaper vs weight/rolling resistance
What do you think?
I am getting new wheels for my Epic HT and trying to figure out what tyres to use. I am sure it was already mentioned in this long thread, but what is the real width of Fast Trak/Renegade 2.35 on 30mm id rim? How about Racing Ray/Ralph 2.25 on the same rim?
Totally depends on terrain and weather conditions. I like the forekaster in the winter and don’t feel it lacks speed or grip, but may be overkill for your area.
Nobby Nic on the front seems overkill compared to the rest
Do you definitely only have 2.35" clearance on the fork? Usually there is plenty of space there, even if the frame is limited by the chain stays.
I don’t have any experience of the Forekaster (old or new), but based off what you describe I’d say go 2.4" Nobby front and 2.2 or 2.4" Racing Ralph rear.
The Ralph is the better rear tyre and honestly I’d imagine you have clearance for the 2.4" (though considering it’s use 2.2" is probably fine). I think for winter you can never have too much front grip. The big front tyre will not slow you down that much on the road and if the trails are Enduro type trails then you want as much grip for turning and stopping as possible on the front.
With 2.35 maxxis’ w/ 25mm int I have about 5mm on either side of chain stays. Ralph’s are pretty similar to Reckons are they? It works great for racing and general trail riding but some of the steeper switchbacks and drop offs I find it difficult to slow down to prepare for these sections. Its often rooty sloppy and rutty in these sections making it a lot of fun but it would be good to have a little more control.
What about running a racing ray or Forekasters as a back tyre? Would I benefit from the additional traction?
I don’t have enough experience on the Forekaster to make any sort of valuable statement one way or the other. Based on the fact that you’re in the UK, and that a lot of other credible TR users from the UK rave about the Forekaster I’d say it’s a reasonable option.
The Ralph is a bit lower profile than the Rekon. I don’t know why you’d use a Ray in the rear over a Ralph. The Ralph has the “paddle” shape centre tread which I think is far more appropriate for braking and pedaling traction than the Ray.
Another option that looks awesome is the Wolfpack Race and Cross (or Speed and Cross, but it’s your winter set up ).
I didn’t want to start a new tire tread… Ah… thread….
So figured I’d post here. I saw this on my Schwalbe Nobby Nic rear tire this evening. One of the side knobs is missing. Ripped right off.
Anyone ever seen something like this?
@DaveWh Never had that issue but I did have a sidewall issue with a Schwalbe tire and they were great to deal with and gave me credit for a new tire.
Thx. I emailed them a pic. Will see what they say.
I’ve never seen that before on any brand of tyre.
Woah, that’s a big hole. I’ve seen knobs ripped clean off of various Maxxis DH tyres, but never exposing the canvas like that. Usually just from hard riding and rough conditions.
How old are those tyres? They look like an older version?
I bought them in September last year. They are the 2.35s, not the current 2.4 generation.
The tire was on my list to replace, as it was getting worn. But I didn’t expect to see a side knob ripped off like that.
Same thing happened to me on a side knob of a Bontrager xr3 about two years ago. It was also a fairly worn tire that was close to replacement.
Side knobs shear off all the time on aggressive tires with soft rubber. I cannot however remember seeing one torn off exposing the carcass like that before. Also it typically starts to happen after the corner knobs are getting “undercut”. Your corner knobs seem to be in fairly good shape, with minimal chafing/undercutting
I emailed Schwalbe. Got the following response.
“We understand factory defects can happen from time to time and monitor all issues through our warranty form as part of our quality control program.
In this case, it appears there was an adhesion issue. We are currently out of stock of the 29x2.35 Nobby Nic, would you be interested in the 29x2.4 size?”
Replacement tire on its way!!
Dave
