XC Race Tire Thread

It WAS available in 2.4 TR. But I checked and it’s no longer on Kenda’s website.

To be honest I’m not surprised because it was a wobbly tyre, unless you pumped it up harder than I like.

Is 64kg at the moment (racing wheigh usually goes down to 61/62) light enough for the TR version? What is different besides weight comparing to the SCT version?

I don’t know… This webshop in Germany still seems to have them: SALE! Kenda Rush Pro TR 29" Folding Tyre - Cross Country | bike-components

TR casing, at least on the booster pro 2.6, is really thin. Like super thin. Sct feels more like a “regular tire”. Having said that…TR here in Florida on our “pine needles over sand”, TR is fine even at 85kg.

5 days later. My Wicked Will measures 2 5/16”. My Nobby Nic 2.25” (at its widest, tread to tread).

I submitted a warranty claim to Schwalbe for the Nobby Nic. Let’s see what they say.

So typical of Schwalbe. I’ve never seen any of their tyres reach advertised widths. My so called 2.4 Rick are still 2.3"/58 mm on 30mm rims, even after many miles of hard use

I’m admittedly not overly familiar with the design and industrialization processes of bike tires, but this sounds like such a weird problem to have from Schwalbe. One could understand this happening maybe back in 2017 when the tires could end up in rims from 20 to 35mm wide, but this is not the case today.

If I wanted a 2.25 tire I’d get one marked as such, so I’m not buying anything from them still they sort this

Agree - a miss of 0.15” can’t be blamed on rims, or manufacturing tolerances. That’s a design issue.

Speculating here - maybe much of their tooling / production capacity is designed for 2.25” tires from past years, and they are “getting with the times” in producing wider tires - but not really producing wider tires, just changing their labeling to say they’re 2.4”?

Check out the vulcanizing step at about the 7 min mark. I’d bet those vulcanizing molds have a maximum tire width capacity. And they are reusing molds designed for earlier generation narrower tires.

Schwalbe makes many of their MTB tires in 29x2.6" and has previously produced tires that were 70-622.

Seems odd that a production limit would occur between 2.25/2.35 and 2.4 but not 2.35 and 2.6 or 70mm.

Even if the 2.6 tires were proportionally undersized they would be bigger than 2.4?

How wide are the casings in those 2.6s ?
Asking because what most of us for a XC application are looking for is casing width, but tire manufacturers normally claim the widest part of the tire and that sometimes is on the thread

Yep. It’s just puzzling that they make their 2.4” tires deliberately / knowingly to be 2.25”.

Possible they have only a small production capacity for tires as big as 2.6, and the bulk of their capacity is from years ago when MTB tires were in the low 2s. :person_shrugging:

Note: the Schwalbes I got were made in Indonesia.

I’m still searching for a fast, true (or damn close) 2.6, and durable (enough) tire. The tire that seems to have come the closest that I’ve used is the bontrager 2.6 XR2. They aren’t very well liked, but when I used them, they felt fast (I know…), had good grip, but just weren’t durable enough for the rough rocky conditions I ride.

The other tire I have been using is the maxxis forecaster 2.6 (old version). This ticks most of the boxes, but it’s too slow. What’s in between these tires that is actually a 2.6?

I don’t have a lot of experience with them, but Specialized has both their Ground Control (with Grid casing) and Butcher & Eliminator (typically with the heavier Grid Trail casing) available in 2.6…

Re: Schwalbe widths. I’ve got a bunch in the garage on various bikes. They’re undersized, but by maybe 0.050in. They’re not new, though, so maybe they stretch after months on the bikes?

Magic Mary Super Trail Soft 29x2.6 (30mm rim): 2.55in
Nobby Nic Super Tail Speedgrip 29x2.4 (30mm rim): 2.35in
Racing Ralph (Cant remember casing) 29x2.4 (28mm rim): 2.35in
Thunder Burt Super Ground Speed 29x2.1 (25mm rims): 2.05in

I’ve got a 2.4 Hans Dampf, too, that I didn’t measure. I don’t much like that tread pattern anyway.

I’ve had multiple sets of Racing Ray/Ralph’s new and old and they never passed past 57mm

Schwalbe makes 2.6” tires. Nobby Nic and Wicked Will. Kenda Booster is another 2.6” tire. Also Vittoria Mezcal and Barzo Trail versions are available in 2.6”.

Don’t know the actual dimensions once installed however.

I’ve ridden XR4 2.6” tires on and off over the past year. Like them for descending. Faster times vs other tires. Times on climbs are a little slower vs other tires. They are a little fragile.

Thanks for the feedback - yeah, I’d like to check the NN in 2.6, but concerned they are undersized as are most of their tires. The boosters also seem to be mentioned a lot - I’m cautious about the durability, but don’t have first-hand experience - folks seem to be happy with them though in general.

The Mezcal is near the top of my list to try next - they seem to tick the boxes on paper and rider feedback.

I’ve tried the xr4’s, and they grip well, are a bit slow and were just as fragile as the xr2 - def the same casing used.

Just measured my 11 month old 2.35" Thunder Burts (Super Race / tan sidewall version) mounted on 29mm internal rims. At the widest point (sidewall to sidewall), front is 2.34" and rear is 2.36".

When I first pumped them up to 40 psi after installing to stretch for a few days, they showed 2.45" at the peak, then settled down to where they are now at ~18 PSI.

They weighed in at 707g & 733g.

I currently have a few 2.6 tires im checking out.

Rekons for grip/fun
Mezcal for durability
Booster for XC

The Booster is not a true 2.6, I think I measured the casing at 62mm. I still think its a great option though. I have not mounted the rekons or mezcal yet, but I imagine the mezcal is going to be quite large from reports.

I wish I had noticed the ground controls in 2.6, I would have skipped the rekons. I have used the 2.4 use the ground control as a “fun/everyday” tire, and like it quite a bit. I also had some great races on it when I didnt have time to swap.

EDIT: I dont see any 29x2.6 ground control tires out there. I do see a 27.5, but even then the tread looks different, and slower.
