I had to look up the Hickson protocol. It sounds like burnout city not polarized training.
Anyway, you know I was just kidding when I said that Coggan should have trained polarized, right?

yep
Coggan insists (again I speak from memory) that the Hickson protocol is the optimal VO2max workout and any other VO2max workout is just sub-optimal. But tbh, to me the 2.5 min rest after 5 min intervals look like a killer. I would most definitely would need to reduce the power of the intervals to complete the workout
Seiler’s research indicates that the body is ready to go again after 2 minutes – even after high zone 5 intervals.
According to Seiler and Coggan, anything much over 2-2.5 minutes after a zone 4 or 5 interval is for a mental break, rather than a physical one.
I like the mental break. equal work and rest periods for me. I’m a wimp like that. Also, it takes me about 4 minutes to check for traffic, turn around, roll down the hill, check for traffic, turn around, then roll into the hill again. That’s my excuse, anyway.
