Where did you workout (ride, run, etc) OUTSIDE today? (2025)

I had this happen to me in Paris. I had Garmin create a route, and it took me down a road that was 6 or more lanes wide and all the sidewalks were fenced off. Scared me enough that I turned around and cobbled together a different way.

I find Garmin auto updates incredibly infuriating. If I’ve said, “wait until later”, automatically forcing the update on me with no warning is unacceptable. There should be some kind of, “you’ve snoozed this twice, if you don’t update in the next 24 hours, we will force it” kind of message.

My Epix wanted to update and I told it no because I knew I was going to be traveling the next day and I didn’t want to screw anything up before hand. Then, as I’m sitting on the plane going through my devices to switch to airplane mode, my watch decided to auto-update, which meant I couldn’t turn my phone off on the plane. Very frustrating.

Occasionally I go mountain biking.

Seriously, I put my bike up 12 months ago with a couple broken spokes thinking “I’ll fix it up soon enough”. Took me 10 months to finally buy a new wheelset (old wheels were cheap, no point in rebuilding), then another 2 to get the bike set back up for riding. I legit haven’t touched my bike in a year.

Yes
ugh. Reminds me of the problems that Windows update’s forced restarts causes to video rendering etc., or any other process that takes multiple days of CPU/GPU time.

“Umm, whose device is this again? I mean, after all, I paid for it.”

I think I’ve mentioned elsewhere about how short a leash I keep my Garmin watch on, & why. Garmin Disconnect.

A nice tour in the French alps

Train now gave me a lovely little threshold workout to welcome me back to structured training this morning. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel but I actually felt pretty great. In the end I was struggling to keep it in zone because the prescribed power was too low for the climb I was doing but I didnt care by that point as I felt great and just wanted to get to the top and see the sunrise.

Ey up Jo - I didn’t realise you were on here too! I will make a point of trying to swing by the Malverns when we’re next in the UK

I’m t-minus 20 days from the UCI Worlds and had a very strong training ride today, with my bike set up as it will be for the Worlds.

It’s a gen 1 Grail in 2xl with Rival 1x12 and GRC1600 wheels. 50mm Raceking on the front, 40mm Terra Speed on the back.

It gives a pretty tail happy handling balance, but I like that. Lots of bite into corners without sacrificing too much straight line speed.

Anyway, I created a course today that was more or less exclusively fast gravel, with a little bit more asphalt than I would usually ride (emulating the worlds course) but a lot more elevation than what I’ll be doing on the 12th of October.

Lots of good segment efforts, which is sometimes a little tougher when high average power and speed is the goal:

What was really nice is that this ride was longer and with more power than my UCI qualifier earlier this month, but with a considerably lower heart rate. I also didn’t cramp at all, and I still had full power at the end.

And the best thing is that the weather and scenery was stunning

I am feeling really good for the finals. Hoping for top 25% in my 40-44 age group

Yes you must! Bring the graveller and we can ride the hills here for a few hours! Good luck for the worlds, proper excited for you!:grin:

I wouldn’t go on holiday without my bike these days!

The Malverns always look properly beautiful. I am trying to think if I’ve been up them, and I think I have. We visited Elgar’s childhood home about 15 years ago or so - it’s close by.

Starting de-load week #2. Tapering a bit for the Army Ten Miler on Sunday, then moving into the FasCat 10-Week Weight Lifting Plan.

Tapering for the Army Ten Miler this weekend. No camera but was gorgeous on the Mall right before sunrise, especially with the full moon. Capitol, Washington Monument, and Lincoln Memorial were wonderful. It’s easy to get used to these sights and overlook them.

Down to Yaxley then a couple of loops of the Connington Airfield for todays recovery session. It was supposed to be mild with light winds but it felt anything but  :dashing_away:

It was originally planned hour long recovery session which is doable on a trainer in my lunch hour but I decided to shorten it to 45mins for an outdoors session.

Lol, I had been wanting to do similar tomorrow but I’ve just been asked if I’m still OK to ride tomorrow night; the ride was 0.84 IF for an hour last week so not exactly compatible with a rest week :joy:

A tad slower than I wanted but right on par with my training runs. Rain held off but it was windy. A little cool before and after the run but great weather for the run. Good job to the Army keeping the run on despite the shutdown.

During the pre-race announcements, the Army Chief of Staff specifically stated that the Secretary of the Army is the one who made the decision to keep the Army Ten Miler despite the shutdown. They also had an additional week to assess the lay of the land, whereas it sounds like the Freedom Runs didn’t have that much time to make a decision / arrangements.

A quick spin down thru the park to make sure the new chain is not threaded over the rear derailleur tab

That clicking sound is just the bones

Got a solid ride in while my high schooler ref’d some soccer games. Beautiful weather - high 40s F at the start, 60s by the end. Over-dressed a bit at the beginning with an Ornot thermal long-sleeve jersey and Micro Climate jacket. Ended up taking the jacket off 15 minutes in. Should have either forgone the jacket altogether or gone with a mid-weight LS jersey. I ditched the buff and cap with about an hour to go. +1 for layering! Did some low cadence work, too.

I go out quite a bit in just a mesh base layer and the microclimate jacket. It’s nice because if you get too hot you can just unzip half way and still have the base layer, but it sucks if you feel the need to completely remove the jacket.

I never thought to use just the Micro Climate Jacket and a base layer. I bought the jacket last fall while on sale and really haven’t used it much (mainly because I’m becoming a wimp about the cold). It was super warm and cut the wind down substantially. I really have no excuse to not ride outside in the cold with it.
