Where did you workout (ride, run, etc) OUTSIDE today? (2024)

:muscle:

2 of my 3 KOMs this year were on the gravel bike with 48mm Pathfinder gravel tires

Hey, if it’s the right tool for the job… :person_shrugging:
I found a segment near my parents’ place that traverses a flat track with a lot of 20mm aggregate (I hesitate to call it gravel; it’s more like ballast) that I thought I should have a go at next time I’m there. It crossed my mind that the 90s mountain bike with 26×1.75s that my sister left at their place might be better for it than my roadie.

Yellow day today, probably won’t ride tomorrow, & I was still yet to claim the Strava granfondo badge, so I went out for a 100k. Went with plan B today which was two out-&-backs to Granton on the cycleway. Beautiful pre-sunrise vista at Granton before the sun was obscured by the clouds it previously lit up.

Figured I’d probably do it in 3h45 (moving) so I earmarked Heavens to associate. Used autopause so I’d get appropriate work durations. Can sorta make out the workout structure but the changes are subtle & there are a lot of road crossings & intersections. Plan A was to continue further North to Bagdad (yes there’s a locality here with that name & yes that’s how it’s spelt ) which being on a highway would’ve been much better for a sustained power objective, but it’s higher altitude & inland, & my finger extensor muscles were already struggling in temps a few °C cooler than expected (it was 3°C). “Oh that’s right, we’re coming into Winter… I should probably dress like it.” :person_facepalming:

A whopping 3min10secs down today on my course PB for the F14/25 Guilden Morden TT. I think I made a faux pa with the warm up hydration. I thought I had two full bottles but only one was full and perhaps I should have used a bladder with a few ml. Another local TT was cancelled though and the photographer turned up at this one, he takes great shots which made up for my poor performance :joy:

1 min strength + sprints

Got a quick spin on the multi-use pathway next to the parkway this afternoon while my parents (who are visiting us for the weekend) went for a walk. JOIN gave me 4x1 min strength (eg low cadence) and 4x10 sec sprints. Nice to get outside, especially since it is supposed to rain the next couple of days. No pics as I was on a tight timeline.

Summer has descended upon Texas with a vengeance…and it’s only May! Got up to leave at dawn and try to beat the heat. Checked temps as soon as I work up…”feels like” was 89 degrees at 5am :grimacing:

3 hours of mostly just low Z2 and working on heat adaptation with 3x12’ SS with 20” surges. Picked a workout that gave me a full hour of warmup and cool down. Did I mention it’s hot?

Note: ignore the elevation profile, I think that’s just Garmin rounding errors because I started and finished in the same flat spot.

Or a front moving through and barometric pressure changing.

Nice power control, BTW.

FreeCycle, London, UK.

7 mile loop in the city closed roads; Coty, Thames, Parliament/BigBen, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square freewheeling around in the sun - nice.

Lol, I went to meet this morning and missed on the chat the Sunday or Monday meet had evolved to Monday. It was 11.5miles from my house on wet roads so after messaging to find out it was the wrong day with a bike now to clean I thought I’d better make it worthwhile. Got back to warm dry sunshine but I thought I’d better clean the bike. I was right to after I’d put the bike away a thunder storm appeared (I had to get something right) :joy:

You can’t fool me. I know Zwift when I see it! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

More fun with Zone 2. Very hot again (feels like 90 at 6am), but after the fiery sunrise, the sky actually turned dark, which provided some relief. Garmin says I’m up to 37%. It’s a bit of a gimmicky data point, but I find it to be good encouragement to get out there and get acclimated when I could just turn on Netflix and ride inside.

My effort up the Col de la Madone form a couple of week’s ago :sunglasses:

A little tougher than it needed to be, predominantly because I rented a bike with a 28-tooth cassette which for me (being a relatively heavier rider), causes problems when the gradient gets up there

Little video that shows the scenery a lot better than photos. :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

And yesterday’s hill-reps effort, in preparation for the Dragon-ride Granfondo at the end of June. Was perfect weather for it - sunny, warm but not too hot , with a gentle cooling breeze :sunny: :sunglasses:

Pretty sure this one isn’t on Zwift…yet. Down Braested Hill, up Sundridge Hill amongst some others.

Forgot to restart Garmin after this pic so Strava gave me a rocket ship home. 30km+, circa 600m climbing.

I used to live by St James’s Park 25 years ago, so your pic brought back a lot of memories of being young and running past the palace. I sure wish I’d bought a flat. It would be worth 10x what I paid for it.

It’s great for running around there, probably up there next Sunday running through St James and into Hyde.

As for property prices, I couldn’t afford a bedsit there at 1999 prices let alone now! :smiling_face_with_tear:

40-20s + 10 min tempo

Local farm country roads. Did the 40-20’s on the way to the loops, and the tempo intervals around the southern most loop.

Very humid / damp this morning. Stormed last night, and more are on the way this afternoon. Had to ditch my glasses - they were fogged up the whole time and couldn’t see anything. Once I took them off, turned out there was lots of wild life around, including turtles (more alive than squished), rabbits, and birds.

Anyway, happy Memorial Day everyone!

The heat has been relentless, but I can’t remember the last time I was at home and got to ride outside 3 days in a row. This is one of my favorite workouts. It always feels easily doable, but also like I got good “real world applicable” work in. 4x8 minute intervals with decreasing intensity (1.5’ Vo2/2.5’ threshold/4’ tempo).

Thankful to those who made the ultimate sacrifice on this Memorial Day in the USA.
